I'm not sure about crystals, but I have been to the nation's only operating diamond mine, located in Arkansas, and it is not worth the trip! On the rare event that you find a diamond, it will be very, very, very, very, small. As far as crystals go, I would say it's not worth it either.
I haven't been in the Hot Springs area since my college days....but I remember several mineral shops in town with spectacular displays of specimens collected in the area. The quartz crystals in the area are particularly nice. I think the shops can tell you places to go to dig for crystals...or they might even have locals set up.
