Hop on Hop Off Bus Tours in San Francisco
Hello everyone
I am thinking about taking a short trip to San Francisco from Southern California in the next month or 2 and I wanted to get some information about the Hop on Hop Off bus tours. How are they? How is the pricing? I took one of these tours in New York City back in 2004 and I really enjoyed it. Does it take you to all the key sites? Also how does one go about booking it? Can you do it when you arrive? I know in New York, they had vendors at all the stop points that sold tickets. I tried looking for an official site on this and couldn't seem to find one. It seems like there are alot of 2nd party people selling tickets online. Any information would be very helpful. Thanks!

I've taken the Gray line bus tour there and enjoyed it. Try typing in gray line (or is it spelled Grey, I forget) tours in google and they should have a website with cities and pricing. I thought it was a great way to see the highlights of the city. Then, we went back and saw what really interested us in our rental car.

We took the Gray line bus tour also. It was not a hop on and off like the ones in NYC. Our guide was great. We did get off the bus at 4 stops for bathroom breaks, drinks, views, etc. You can book these at most hotels. We just went to the ticket office at Fisherman's Wharf and bought our tickets. I can guess sometimes they will sell out ahead of time. Here's the website -- we took the deluxe tour.

Our favorite tour in San Francisco is the motorized cable car tour, which leaves near Fisherman's Wharf.
The route includes going over the Golden Gate bridge, with a stop for photo ops on the other side, and a comprehensive tour of other SF sights. Commentary was exceptional, as tours go.
For getting around, we always buy a "Passport" (which includes the cable cars) and print the excellent MUNI transit map, which is one fantastic map of the city and its sights and attractions.
I would discourage you from taking a "coach" tour with no stops and inferior views from those vehicles.

You have several options for hop on hop off tours in SF; the motorized cable cars, the open double decker bus (like in London), and now the SF Quackers - a Duck tour. You can choose when you arrive if you like. I noticed that some have reduced prices when you buy the tickets online. Some combine tickets with other thinks, like Alcatraz.
I've never taken one but they seem to be full of people. One of the things I noticed about the doubledeck buses in London is you can see so much more from the top level.
