When I say rent a car I mean rent it at 1:30 PM at the Airport and turn it back in in Wakiki that evening so no overnight parking. My reason for that instead of a shuttle is because there are 4 of us ( 2 couples) and after we get to our condo we will need to go to Costco grocery shopping which is 4 miles from our condo on Lewers Street. We can get a shuttle for $30.00 for all 4 of us according to http://www.honoluluairportshuttle.co..._Transfer.html but then would need to cab to Costco and back.
Has anyone done this and where would the best place to rent a car that can be dropped off in Waikiki. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

You aren't going to get 4 people and their luggage into a rental car very easily.

Take the shuttle. They have plenty of room.

A full size car will work fine. We are going from home to airport in my Chrysler Sebring and our luggage fits in the trunk no problem.Have done it before.

But my suggestion is to rent a car the entire time while on Oahu.

You can see the island much better with a car.

By the time you pay for shuttles, cabs, buses & car rental for a couple of days, you could have had the car the entire time.

With two couples traveling together, I'd get a car at the airport, keep it the entire time, split the expenses. Everyone makes a big deal about the cost of overnight parking at Waikiki hotels, but I never understand that. Considering the cost of an entire vacation, and the convenience it buys you, it is money well spent in my book.

Definitely would recommend you get a car. So much to see on the Island - including going to Hanauma Bay to swim/snorkel (go early to beat the crowds) - http://www.hawaiiweb.com/hanauma-bay...-preserve.html

We usually take a picnic lunch - or pick up some Sushi to enjoy at the lovely beaches there. And make sure to rent some snorkel gear - which is usually easier in Waikiki - at the likes of Snorkel Bob's or others. Just check out the Tourist mags that are all around the airport - and they also have some good maps in them, as well as specials/coupons, etc.

We also love driving up to the North Shore - and around the island. We usually break up the drive into two days - doing the Southern loop when we go to Hanuma Bay and then on to Kailua and back to Honolulu/Waikiki - and then another day up the middle of the island to Haleiwa/North Shore - and down the East side to Kaiula and then back to Waikiki. And if you want to visit the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor - also go early - and take the Navy Boats, the only ones who actually dock at the Memorial.

Normally I wouldn't rent a car in honolulu but with 4 people, it would be cheaper in the long run especially if you know that you are going to be sight seeing and not just staying in Honolulu. If you are staying put then rent it for the day, do your shopping and turn it in. Some condo's offer free parking - at least th eones I've stayed do. $30.00 sounds very cheap for 4 people to get to Waikiki. If it is $30.00 total for 4 people to get into Waikiki, then please tell us which shuttle service you used cause that is $7.5 each and i would like to use them next time......

This is our second trip to Oahu and we will rent a car for 2 or 3 days but not for the whole 7 we are there. When we leave and go to the Big Island we do have a car rented for the whole 8 days we are there.

Considering it is your second trip, then just take Hawaii23 from & back to the airport.

You can rent a car for two days & get by with one night parking.

Pick up the car at 8am & tour the island.

When you get back at around 5pm park for the night.

After touring the following day, drop everyone else off at the hotel & turn the car into the rental agency.

As long as you don't go over a 24 hour period, you can get by with one day parking.

Or if you rent for 3 days, you can get by with two days parking.

Good point Dusty. That is what we will do. I was concerened with getting to Costco and back Grocery shopping when we get there but we can do that the next moning before we leave for the day or that evening when we get back. I do remember shopping at the Food Pantry on Kuhio but just thought it would be better selection and cheaper at Costco, however there is also Foodland and I think a newer Safeway only 2 miles from where we are.

This last post is right on the money. Safeway and Foodland will have items you need in quantities you can use for your short stay. Just plan ahead and get the car for the days you need it to travel long distances. Otherwise, cabs and buses will do the trick.
