Honolulu: Renaissance Ilikai or Doubletree Alana Waikiki

Anyone have experience and/or recommendations for either of these two hotels in Honolulu? DH must be there on biz in October and I'm tagging along!

The Ilikai has rooms which give you full-on ocean views, while the Alana Doubletree is a block or so inland -- "distant ocean views".

If the ocean view isn't important to you, I'd recommend the Alana over the Ilikai. I just spent a business weekend there, and appreciated the impeccable service, as well as being just on the _edge_ of Waikiki, as opposed to being in the thick of it.

If they are about the same in price, I would choose the Ilikai. It has a fantastic view of the ocean and Ala Wai Boat Harbor.

moondoggie, I have stayed at the Ilikai and it is fine. If DH will be in meetings you can walk to the Ala Moana Shopping Center. Can't say about the Doubletree since I haven't stayed there.

Do you have to stay at one of these? If not, maybe you could go with a priceline 4* or resort for the same money as the others.

Also, how did you like the Shrimp Station on Kauai?

I vote for the Ilikai too.

Thanks for all the input, fellow fodorites. I think I want to spend my time on Waikiki Beach, if you guys think that's a worthwhile endeavor. Are both of these within walking distance of the beach?

Iceeu2, we were not able to go to Kauaii as we planned. Four days prior to our flight, my dear 87 YO MIL was visiting from the east coast, and she fell and broke her pelvis at our house! She was here for four weeks before she would be allowed to fly home (DH flew with her). So, we had to cancel everything. We don't want to go in the summertime, and the first time DH and I were both able to travel together is October 22. So, that's when we're going. And I'm really looking forward to Shrimp Station! Plus, I have been investigating the Birds in Paradise motorized hang-gliding thing--any experience with this?

I think maybe Gyppielou or roxy one did the Birds in Paradise last year. You might post and ask about that.

You know, if I were staying on Waikiki Beach again, I think for being centrally located I would stay at the Outrigger Waikiki or the Sheraton next door that has the rocking chairs, not sure which one it is. We stayed at the Waikiki Marriott and it was really good.

You are going to have so much fun.

Sorry about your mil..hope things are better for her now.

The beach actually goes from near the Ilikai and goes to Diamond Head. There are just a couple of places where there is a short walkway.

So you can walk the beach all the way from the Ilikai to Diamond Head.
