Honolulu layovers.... one 30hrs, other 17hrs. Ideas?
Hey guys, really appreciated the ideas from this forum on our last trip to the USA. This time we are flying Hawaiian Airlines and arrive into Honolulu around 8am Tuesday and fly out 2pm Wednesday. On our way back we arrive at 1pm and out again 8am next morning. Never been to Hawaii before and hoping for some advice.
First overnight stay was thinking of Hilton Hawaiian Villiage given there is a lot to see/do there and it's at Waikiki Beach. Second layover was thinking of getting a hotel near airport with free transfers (given our first will probably cost $60 in transport to resort).
Would like to get a glimpse of Hawaii. Dinner show would be great, would also like to get to Pearl Harbour but understand it would be a little stretch.
Very interested in your suggestions please.

How many of you are there? There are shuttles that run to all the Waikiki hotels, dropping off when you arrive and picking you up for departure. We use Roberts at a price of $28 round trip. They run quite frequently.
Hawaiian Village is nice, but it's not in the middle of the action on Waikiki. For your return, you might like to get a hotel on up the beach. I'd blow the money rather than staying out at the airport, especially if you are looking for an activity.

I too would NOT stay near airport. Very removed from anything Reliable Shuttle is another great shuttle service that is very dependable for around 22 per person round trip. HHVillage is big with lots of kids if that is okay with you. Great pool and lagoon. easy walking distance to main attractions in Waikiki and there are trolleys that run back and forth between Village and Waikiki Beach area. I guess it depends on what you want to see and do. The USS Arizona is always a good thing to see and you can take a bus there. Tix in advance. I like the beach down at HHVillage better than in front of the Royal Hawaiian which is a nice place to stroll the grounds. You can google events in Waikiki to see if anything special is going on while you are there. Outrigger hotels are good and on the beach - Waikiki area and farther down near the Halekulani. Roys is a nice place to catch a meal and the Moana Surfrider is nice for hawaiian music and cocktails. There are lots of Happy Hour deals in Waikiki so check those out too. PF Chang has one that is very good.. Enjoy your brief stay.....

On the longer layover - I would try to go snorkeling at Hanauma Bay.
On the 2nd - shorter layover - staying at the airport is the easiest.
Moana Surfrider is a great place - old style and not as expensive as the other more upscale resorts.

17 hours is too long to stay at the airport. I would get a Waikiki (or at least Ala Moana) hotel both times.
As far as what to do, it just depends on your interests. For me I'd probably just enjoy Waikiki, go to the beach, hit both the parks (Fort de Russy and Kapiolani), have a couple nice meals somewhere with a view, do a little souvenir shopping.
