We stayed next door Christmas of 99 and walked around the grounds. It was very nice and the beach in front was not super crowded like the ones down by the rock. I did not care for that area of Hawaii and would much rather gone to Mauii but the price was right. We had some rain but also several hot beautiful days.

Joan, If you must go to Honolulu the Hilton Hawaiian Village is perfect if you are bringing kids. I stayed there two years ago and it has something for everyone. It's like its own little city. Lots of family activities, plenty of shops and there's even a doctor clinic right on sight. You don't need a car as all the tour companies come right to the hotel to pick you up. Make sure you go to the Polynesian Cultural Center. Also the Pearl Harbor Memorial. I thought Pearl Harbor would be kinda hokey and non-eventful, but it was rather moving. There is plenty to do in Honolulu and on Oahu in general. The Hilton is right on Waikiki beach where there is always something going on and GREAT people-watching! But Waikiki is like New York City with a beach. My personal preference is the more subdued but breathtakingly beautiful Kauai. Teenagers might not agree, though. Maui is more commercialized than Kauai, but not the big-city atmosphere of Honolulu. Maui is probably a happy medium if you've got teenagers. I had my two 70+ parents with me when I went so we did 3 days in Waikiki doing all the touristy stuff. Then we spent 3 days on Kauai just relaxing from it all. Hope you have a fabulous time and make sure you do a helicopter ride if you end up in Kauai.

I forgot to mention that I was there during Christmas. Make sure you book way early since Christmas is a popular time and they like to charge twice as much. I booked everything in early October and when I got there, I was thanked for booking early. We also saw the Don Ho Show while we were there. It was surprisingly wonderfully entertaining.

Melinda back..In answer to your above second question...yes I would definitely take teens to Maui over Honolulu. Maui is much less a city and there is plenty of action for the kids in the main hotel area. A real nice open air mall is right on the beach and in the strip of hotels...such as the Hyatt, Marriott, Sheraton etc. Wailea and Kapalua areas are too calm for them but wonderful for them to visit. Kapalua has a fabulous snorkeling area. Lahina is the touristy main town area that you would visit but not stay at. E-mail me with any other questions. We are going back with our little ones for Christmas 2001 and we are going to go to Maui.
