Honeymooning in Maui and Kaui

Hi! We are honeymooning in Maui and Kaui this May. It is our first time in Hawaii, so I was hoping some of the more 'seasoned' folks could help us out with must-sees and places to avoid. We will be staying at the Napili Kai on Maui basically because we plan on being active there and don't want to spend too much on a hotel room. In Kauai we are staying at the Princeville and the Hyatt. We are pretty much up for anything, so any suggestions on what to do, where to eat, best luaus, etc. would be great! Thanks!

Wen honeynooned at the Hyatt on Kauai. I was very disappointed in their luau because it was held in a banquet hall. I am not sure if there was some reason why it wasn't held outdoors, but it really took away from the luau feel.
We stayed next door to the Princeville. EAting recommendations on the north shore would be Zelo's Beach HOuse in Hanalei for dinner. THey have a few outdoor seats. Nice atmosphere, good food. For a romantic meal with a beautiful view you could eat at Bali Hai at the Hanalei Bay Resort, next door tho the Princeville.
Definitely go to Kee Beach and hike the first part of the Kalalau trail. The trail head is right at the beach. Get there early because the lot tends to fill up quickly.
We took a horseback ride to a waterfall and the trip included lunch. There was time to swim under the waterfall, etc. That was through Princeville Stables.
Take in Waimea Canyon, do a boat ride along the Napali coast while staying on the south side. Snorkel at Poipu beach and have lunch at Brennecke's. Great strawberyy pina coladas by tghe pitcher. Great view of Poipu Beach. Very casual place. Take your own snorkeling gear and you can snorkel off of any of the beaches. Take in as many beaches as you can. OUr favorites were POipu, Kee, Tunnels, Larsen's and Molooa. Have fun!!

Good advice on Kaua`i above where we honeymooned in '02, here's our favorites for Maui:

1. Road to Hana
2. Sunrise atop Mt. Haleakala
3. Snorkel Cruise to Molokini or Lanai
4. Maui Ocean Center (to learn about what you see snorkeling)
5. Mama's Fish House for Dinner
6. Charlie's ((&)) in Paia for Breakfast, suggest Macadamia nut pancakes& ask for Coconut syrup.

P.S. We found the www.wizardpub.com guidebooks to be most helpful on our trips.

Addition to "where to eat near Princeville Hotel" -- Sabella's (within walking distance of the hotel). Started last year as a great Italian-seafood restaurant, it's now evolving into fine dining (at -- for Kaua`i at least -- reasonable prices).

The largest selection of appetizers, entrees and desserts we've seen at any restaurant on this island (we live here; dine out 2-4 times per week), with lovely presentation, and attentive service.

No -- I'm in no way affiliated with the restaurant or any of its owners/employees. Just want folks to know where to get a special dinner.

Oh, and they start serving at about 5PM (great for those of us who prefer to have dinner early).

Well you can read my trip report or the many others on these two islands We went to the same two for our honeymoon and it was amazing.

Maui -
Definitely the Road to Hanna, Old Lahaina Luau, dinner at Mama's Fish House, dinner at Nick's, a sunset sail on America II, shopping in Lahaina, and of course checking out beaches and snorkeling (Honolua Bay for snorkeling!).

Kauai - Waimea Canyon, snorkeling at Tunnes and Ke'e, Anini Beach, National Tropical Botanical Gardens, dinner at Tidepools, dinner at the BeachHouse, pics by the lighthouse, etc.

Aloha

We just got back from Maui and Kauai.

On Maui we also stayed at Napili Kai and liked very much as it was a good price. One thought thought, ask for a room in the wing that has air conditioning if that is imp9ortant to you or if they put you in the wing right next to the construction. You can read my trip report for more details "Hawaii trip report Sept. 25-Oct. 9th.

While on Maui I recommend doint eh road to Hana and speding the ight up there if you can. Dopphin excursion and if the budget allows ahve the best meal of your lives I think at Nick's in the Kei Lani Reort in Wailea. Shoping in Lahina and at Whaler's village in Kaanapili.

As for Kauai (our favorit island) We also stayed at the Hyatt (WOW) what a wonderful FUN hotel and grounds. Be sure to drive up Waimaa Canyon and do the helicoper ride. I HIGHLY recommend Inter-Island Helicopter that includes a waterfall landing, swimming and lunch, again if your budget allows. Also have sunset dinner at The BEach House and Tidepools at the Hyatt. In the north we did not stay at Princeville but did go there for lunch at Cafe Hanalie and got to see one of the rooms. The views are absolutely amazing and the views form the oceanview rooms are beyond beautiful. We both decided that next time we will stay a few days at Priville. We do recommend hiking the first few mils of the trail and going to Kee and Tunnels beach.

If you have more specific questions let me know.

Honeymooners, have a great time. Kaui is beautiful...we liked the north side the best...it's lush and green, and has some nice snorkeling, hiking, and a cute little lighthouse.

We found the south side near Poipu to be a little too touristy for our tastes...it was an okay place to take our kids to swim and snorkel, but if it was my honeymoon I'd rather be somewhere that has a more secluded feel.

There's a canyon you can drive up from the south side...it's been a few years but I think it's called Waimea Canyon...and you can actually hike up a swamp if you really enjoy getting muddy (I'm serious!) This was my husband's most joyous moment in Kaui.

We drove up the western side but found it fairly deserted and the water wasn't safe to swim on that side. Also it seemed there were some people camped out on the beach and we felt like we were disturbing them or something...Skip the western side of Kaui. We liked the eastern side and the northern side of Kaui.

This was in June several years ago.
