My fiancee and I are planning on honeymooning in Key West for a week starting 10/1/99. It looks like the Marriott Casa Marina or the Marriott Reach would suit us as we would like some "luxury" amenities plus would like to be close to Old Town. This will be a first trip and we would appreciate any feedback on our hotel as well as food and activities.

My wife and I stayed at the Casa Marina and really enjoyed it. The place retains a Carib / Colonial feel that many of the Caribbean islands have. It has a resort feel, but one from a bygone era. The staff was friendly and responsive, the accomodations romantic, and the atmosphere very nice. One night we wandered down to the beach to eat a casual dinner (luau-type foods) and have drinks. The tables, serving tables, and bar are all outside so you can dine under the stars. There was a singer (think Sade) accompanied by a jazz guitarist who played nice, smooth, slow jazz (think 'Girl From Ipanema'). To add to this, there were small waves breaking behind us, and a nice breeze that made the palms sway. That memory stands out the most, as it was the nicest, most relaxed feeling I have ever had. I've heard good things about the Marriott Reach but haven't stayed there...after staying at the Casa Marina, it's the only place I want to stay when we go to the Keys!
Neither of these properties is particularly close to the action/activities on Duval Street. There are lots of nice accommodations in Key West that are nearer...including the Ocean Key House, Hyatt and Pier House. All three of these are on the Gulf and there are quite a number of excellent smaller hotels in Key West (like the Marquesa Hotel and the Gardens) For a honeymoon I think you can do a little better. And by the way, for the ultimate luxury you might consider Little Palm Island.
