We stayed at Ocean Shores which was on the northern edge of town. OK rooms, nothing special, but reasonable, and had wonderful views. Land's End is probably the nicest place right at the end.
But here's a suggestion to check out before you fully book all your nights. We did a one night package from Homer to Seldovia. It's done through the Boardwalk Hotel there, a nice little place. You pay them a package price (about $129-$139 per person) and you take a couple hour nature cruise from Homer to Seldovia. You get one night's lodging at The Boardwalk (plus all afternoon to explore the quaint Seldovia) and the next day they fly you back to Homer on a glacier/bear spotting flight. There were just two of us on our flight and our young pilot really found a lot of bears we saw and really took us up over the glacier. This was a highlight of our trip. We also had a wonderful dinner on Seldovia at The Mad Hatter right across from the Boardwalk Hotel.

We stayed at the Landsend which has wonderful views of the mountain and water. It's at the very end of the spit. We would see otters floating by occasionally. We also, stayed at this bed and breakfast which was really our own personal cabin up in the mountains surrounded by beautiful trees. We wanted the best of both worlds. Homer is fabulous. I don't recall the name of the bed and breafast but, if you go to placestostay.com or bedandbreakfast.com I'm sure you can find something similiar.

There are so many places in Homer! Check this site www.cabinsinhomer.com
Almost every cabin/chalet has a link to its own site and you will be able to find detailed description of each place. I bet you will find what you are looking for. Good luck

We also stayed at Ocean Shores. The rooms are not special, but they are clean and roomy. What makes this place so special to where we would go back again are the views. It's just spectacular and we'd definatly go back again. Just make sure to request a waterfront room.

The Land's End is not the place to stay for 5-6 days if you are a party of more than two people. The rooms are so small that even with only 2 people, I would recommend this place for only one or two nights max. I have never stayed in a hotel room of smaller dimensions in over 50 years of travel.

We stayed at Birch Tree Bed and Breakfast - it's a lovely 2 bedroom home - the owner is an artist and stays in her next door studio in the summer - $65/night room w/queen bed, share a bathroom w/the room next door or rent the whole house:

A word of caution on Lands End. Unless ALL the rooms there have been remodeled in the past 3 years, be careful. They did build a new section in the last 3 years which is supposedly very nice. When I was there in May 2000 we were in an older room (not in the new section) and it was not pretty. In fact, it was rather rundown. I would not return there unless I had a room in the newer section, and I'm sure you will pay a lot more for it. The view is nice at Lands End, but not worth the room prices they charge.

I am going to Homer in August 2004. Originally I was going to stay at Lands End but decided this was more of a "resort" than we wanted. We're staying at A Memorable Experience B&B and since we haven't been there yet, I can't comment (although I've talked to the owner a few times and they sound nice). I can say that I contacted a lot of the B&Bs in the area and it seemed like you get a lot more for your money plus a relaxing setting, especially since you'll be there for a while. It seemed like the actual location wouldn't matter too much since downtown Homer is within a couple of miles of all these places anyway.

We stayed at Beeson's B&B in 1999, and a friend stayed there this summer on my recommendation. Very nice, extremely friendly folks, great breakfast. Worth a look, if nothing else. They have a website.

Internetwiz, your comment gave me a good laugh. You stated, "Originally I was going to stay at Lands End but decided this was more of a "resort" than we wanted."
A "resort"? For those who haven't been there, let me make it clear that Lands End is NOT in any way, shape, or form a resort. It's a basic hotel with a decent restuarant and a great location. That's about it.

MileKing, you beat me to it. If you call the local Motel6 out on the edge of town a RESORT, then yes, maybe so is Land's End. I suppose there might be a little kids' swing set somewhere on the premises. Perhaps that qualifies it for "recreational" resort.

I was born and raised in Homer, and currently live 75 miles north, next to a river where all the King Salmon live-(a few lucky ones are resting comfortably in my freezer). Anyhow, there are some wonderfully cozy, yet classy and unique cabins, at the top of the hill before you descend into Homer proper, or go out to the touristy "spit", which is a narrow strip of land with beaches, but a bit overcrowded for my taste. These cabins are calleed Alaskan Suites, and they have a website. These cabins have it all, nice patio with a view of the bay, big hot tub, tv with dvd, surround sound, free movies to check out, small but greatly equipped kitchen with a few basics for you and a microwave. You'd love them. My family has stayed there. Also, a sleeper sofa, very nice, clean beyond belief, first class. Good luck and enjoy our pristine and healthy part of the country next summer. Last summer, the peninsula experienced a heatwave, and we had gorgeous tans! I looked it up for you, www. Alaskansuites.com

Jacquie,
I've also stayed at the Land's End. It's nice place, clean, amazing view. My room was right over the sea and it was lovely to lie in bed with the breeze coming through and listening to the birds, etc...BUT
for five or six nights.......if it were me, I would find a nice cabin up high over Homer looking out over the mountains and water. It's a spectacular view. Jetset1 had a great idea!

Thank you all for the suggestions. We checked out all of them, and then looked at others as well. We finally decided to go with a place called Victorian Heights Bed and Breakfast. It's located on a hill overlooking Downtown Homer. I spoke with the owner who seemed very nice. Our room looks like a nice size, has a balcony overlooking the water below. The price was good and AAA gave it three diamonds. I'll report on it when we get back from our trip. Actually, we finally booked all our hotels (17 days)and lined up a rental car, so we're good to go. Itinerary will take us from Anchorage to Copper Center to Valdez, ferry back to Whittier, Seward, Cooper Landing, Homer, Alyeska Resort, and back to Anchorage. Can't wait.

You will love Alyeska. In fact, my family and I will be up there skiing over Thanksgiving weekend Enjoy your trip and don't forget to bring or buy the bug spray with heavy deet concentration. It's essential. Some mosquitos have been spotted carrying off small poodles, lol.

Just to clarify, I didn't mean resort in the same way one would stay in a resort in Hawaii. I felt it was an overly hyped place that was in a crowded area. With Homer being an artists community of sorts, it seems like there are a lot more interesting places to stay than a pseudo-Motel 6 as Patrick suggests.
