hilton head,sc
I would like to drive down to hilton head ..and stay for 2 weeks..I'm coming from NYC,we've never been to hilton head ,If someone can clue me into where to stay. My wife is handicapped,is it wise to stay near the beach, harbor or in town? If so what would be the best places to stay, whether a hotel, resort,or condo? Places of interest, and of course places to eat.

Hilton Head is enjoyable with a condo or in a hotel.
We stay in a condo because we like being able to have a kitchen for eat-in meals as we like. Many HH condos are ocean front. The balconies can have spectacular views.
For condo rentals, visit Sea Pines Rentals, VRBO, or South Beach Inn and Vacation Rentals to name a few.
One area we like is Southbeach. Many condos are ocean front. All have pools, many with ocean view from the pool. A short walk or wheel chair push to South Beach Marina with several restaurants and shops.
However, Hilton Head has fine hotels nearby the ocean if you prefer including the Westin, Marriott, Crown Plaza, Holiday Inn. At Harbourtown is the Inn at Harbourtown, a fine upscale hotel.
Our current favorite HH restaurant is the Skull Creek Boathouse. Truffles is a long time family favorite. Marley's offers Caribbean cuisine for an island vacation.
Visit previous HH advice on the forums that could fill all your time before July.
Have a great trip.

There are so many condos and houses that are one level. We always prefer to rent a house or a condo for the space and the privacy. I would recommend vrbo or beachproperties - we have done both several times. Sea Pines is our favorite plantation to stay in because of all the things to do. We love to eat at Old Fort Pub in the Hilton Head Plantation. Have a great trip!

I consider Hilton Head an overdeveloped real estate option that happens to be near the ocean--some places, but not all. The rest are just houses "near" the ocean.
There are many places that you could choose that would be more charming, and certainly accessible to her.
You can go to many places that your wife could have at least a view of the water, and also get to it.
Please look at Litchfield Beach and Golf Resort for accomodations. Look at VRBO for places.
HH is a sterile housing development. There are better places.

Well I like HH but I can see why some would not. There are various areas on the island, called plantations, some have restricted access others are public areas. I think the island has been pretty tastefully developed - no high rises but there are many chain restaurants, putt putt, and such so that it is a big time family destination.
We like to stay in Sea Pines Plantation as it is a quiet part of the island. There are many condos availabe thru SeaPines rentals - they are helpful on the phone and could probably guide you to a good unit for your wife. You might also enjoy a unit with a marsh view - we enjoy the birds and wildlife of SeaPines (my husband also likes a view of a fairway to watch the golfers). There are also several Marriott properties, some on the beach, some by a marina if you'd prefer that type of accomodation.
You might want to check out Yelp for some restaurant reviews - there are alot of overpriced mediocre places but you can get some good meals with a little research.

We go to HH several times a year and love it there. Last month we stayed in the Port Royal Plantation in the Royal Dunes condos-these condos are all three bedroom, three baths so you have plenty of room. They have an elevator and covered parking. They are not on the beach, but you can get there walking(across the street). There is a walkway to the beach that is handicap accessible.
We have also stayed in the Shipyard Plantation(most of the condos there have many steps) and have also stayed in Sea Pines.
Restaurants we like are Sea Shack, Black Marlin, Skullcreek Boathouse, Frankie Bones and Old Oyster Factory. We love seafood and eat it every night we are there.
