Hilton Head & Sorrounding -- Places to visit
My friends and I are vacationing in Hilton Head (Palmetto Dunes) Island next month, we will be staying there for a week and need your help in deciding our itenarary.
We are three couples, willing to travel around and have never visited this part of the country before.

Charleston is definitely worth a visit. From HHI it is probably about a 1.5-2 hr drive depending on where you are on the Island, how bad traffic is, and where you are going in Charleston.
I would 2nd the suggestion of going to Beaufort which is probably about 45 minutes away. You could do a walking tour of Beaufort have lunch and then drive out to the park at Hunting Island which is on the ocean while you are there and hike around.

I, too, would highly recommend Charleston. A great way to see Charleston is a mini-bus tour. Go to the visitors center and the busses will be lined up and you can pick which one you'd like to take. After many times of going to Charleston, we finally took one of these tours and I would recommend them to anyone.

To:ganesansgi You will see lots of earlier POSTS that debate Charleston versus Savannah. My contention for a 1st time visitor is to see Savannah and save Charleston for a later visit. To me they are very similar. An extra 90 minute drive to Charleston is unnecessary. Check earlier POSTS in GA for restaurants and stop at a visitor center for options of bus tours & maybe ghost tours.Don't overplan your trip to the point that you miss enjoying HHI.

Savannah is wonderful - visit the river front area. Also, visit Tybee Island, even though it'll be too cool to be in the water the beach area is great. I agree, Charleston is a long drive from Hilton Head. Personally, I didn't like HH very much - having to pay to get on the area where the Lighthouse is was too much for me. That area should be free to visitors.
