When?
Why did you book this particular hotel?

It would not be my first choice of location if I wanted to be near the Mall attractions, and it is pricy.

I was looking at grand hyatt but hilton cheaper. So not the best location for tourist sightseeing or museums? What are some other suggestions? It's for September next year so I can cancel without fees

The Capital Hilton is in a great location for sightseeing. It is within spitting distance of 3 metro stations, a 10 minute walk to the White House and a 20 minute walk the Washington Monument. It's a very large hotel which mainly caters to business & convention clientele but plenty of families do stay there. The "drawback" is that the downtown neighborhood is corporate/business so the nearest by restaurants are more upscale & pricey.

The Grand Hyatt might be a better choice for younger children. It's also a large convention hotel but it is in the Penn Quarter neighborhood -- lot of restaurants up & down the price scale near by. It's very close to two Metro stations and many popular sights for visitors. The National Mall is a 10 minute walk. The Hyatt has a indoor pool.

Don't know your budget for hotels. but there is a Courtyard Marriott in Penn Quarter which probably checks in at a lower rate than either of the two mentioned places. September can be a pricey month in DC -- Congress is back in session after the August recess. Also convention and conference business is booming these days.

Thanks obxgirl, I might see what the marriott offer, the Grand Hyatt was just too expensive, even the Hilton is a bit more than I wanted to spend at $645 for 3 nights, but thought the are might be better. But if restaurants etc are better in Penn area, I am happy to look there. I am not familiar with DC are at all so I appreciate any feedback.

That Courtyard in Penn Quarter really is well-located, I can vouch for that. In a totally different, but also well-located, neighborhood is The Dupont Circle Hotel, you might check the rates there.

what about the Holiday Inn Washington Central/White House? Is that a better area or same area as Hilton?? Or Crown Plaza: The Hamilton, or Holiday Inn Washington Capitol?

(Isn't there an Embassy Suites in Penn Quarter, too? Sorry, I'm not a DC hotel expert!)

Meggsy76, do you know how to use googlemaps.com? You can out the names of these hotels into that and see where they are located in relation to one another as well as the various monuments. I suggest you try doing that sometime.

The Hotel Rouge is. Kimpton hotel, which is a great brand. It's not that convenient to transit. The Capitol Hilton is better located. But either Penn Quarter or DuPont Circle is a better location.

$645 for 3 nights

That is not a bad price for 3 nights at the Capital Hilton -- this week rooms are in excess of $300/night. DC is not an inexpensive city although deals can be found at certain times of the year and often on weekends. You can lower your cost a bit by staying outside of the city in nearby Arlington, Crystal City or Alexandria.

Agree that Penn Quarter and Dupont Circle are good locations. PQ's advantage is that it is a walkable distance to the National Mall and some of the museums. It also has access to more metro stations.

The Holiday Inn Washington Central/White House, The Hotel Rouge and a Doubletree Hotel you didn't mention are located near Scott Circle. It's a nice area, a mix of hotels, residential, embassies and local restaurants & businesses. My choice among those three would definitely be the Hotel Rouge (directly across the street from the Australian Embassy) b/c I am a hug fan of Kimpton properties and I spent the better part of one winter staying there. The rooms are enormous by normal hotel standards and the staff is a bunch of complete sweethearts. The closest two metro stations are a 10-12 minute walk. For me that isn't a big deal but if you have young kids and are already doing a lot of walking, that could matter for you. These hotels are about a 30 minute walk to the National Mall.

The Hamilton Crown Plaza is two blocks east of the the Capital Hilton. Same comments apply.

I'd probably pass on the Holiday Inn Washington Capitol given the other choices you have. It's location is just south of the National Mall near the L'Enfant Plaza metro. Nothing particularly wrong with it. Government business by day, boring at night.

Thanks again for the ideas. It's the price thats keeping me interested in the hilton so far. Also will probably do HoHo bus for one day as kids will enjoy that. Plan to do spy museum too so not sure if metro will be needed a lot? Or will I still need it?

I think the Capital Hilton is a good central location, also. You just can't walk out the door and be at the Mall, but there are other places in DC, it's not far from a metro stop, it's fine. And you can actually walk to the White House real easily from there.some tourist site within a few blocks, that's all. And it's not a real "cozy" neighborhood, meaning you might not enjoy walking up and down the nearby streets looking for a restaurant like you could in Penn Quarter or some other areas. But it's fine.

I really like Kimpton Hotels also but the Rouge just isn't convenient because it's so far from a metro stop compared to other choices, and it's also just on a major thoroughfare (16th St). The Kimpton near the Portrait Gallery is very convenient, though, I suppose that costs more? (the Monaco). The Capital Hilton is definitely more convenient than the Rouge.

I would continue to look for properties in your price range in Penn Quarter. But between the Capital Hilton & the Hotel Rouge, for a family stay, I would give the edge to the Rouge.

Enormous rooms
Friendly staff
Smaller hotel, cozier neighborhood (residential, embassy, foundations)
Proximity to restaurants, a large upscale grocery with an extensive prepared foods section, coffee shop, pharmacy

It is a 10 minute walk to Dupont Circle metro (red line) and a 12 minute walk to McPhereson Square (blue line)

For proximity to sites, I'd give the edge to the Capital Hilton. It is a five minute walk to a metro station. It's 2.5 blocks closer to the White House and the National Mall than the Rouge. It's "drawback" is that it's a less interesting neighborhood, esp. for a family.

I really like Kimpton Hotels also but the Rouge just isn't convenient because it's so far from a metro stop compared to other choices, and it's also just on a major thoroughfare (16th St)

Christina, Are you unaware that both the Rouge & the Capital Hilton are located on 16th Street, a couple of blocks from one another? It's a large city street. DC is full of them.

The HO/HO bus tours are a pretty pricey way to see the city, so I don't recommend them. But if it's something your kids want to do, then I strongly recommend that you stay on the bus for the entire loop(s) first. Once you get off the bus, there can be long waits for another bus, which really cuts into your sightseeing. Once you've done the loop(s) once, then you can get off on the 2nd go-round to see the sites close up.

If your kids are aged 10 or under, then I would not recommend a visit to the Spy Museum. There's a ton of reading involved and young kids just won't get much out of the visit. (And it's an expensive museum to start with.) You might also consider the Crime and Punishment Museum in lieu of the Spy Museum as there are lots of interactive exhibits there which your kids (and you) would enjoy. (There are very few interactive things at the Spy Museum.)

Plan to walk the monuments at night. (You don't need to go on a tour to do this.) They are spectacular to see when all lit up. If your kids can't walk them all on one night, see those along the National Mall on one evening and those around the Tidal Basin on another evening.
