Hey New York--are you expecting bad weather on Feb. 1?

OK, I'm just messing with ya, I know you won't have the February 2007 forecast until at least next week.

My real question is this: I'll be coming through JFK on that date while making my way to Israel. I was wondering how often the NY airports close for bad weather. I realize NY is much better equipped for icy conditions than the airports in the south, but I am curious as to how often it gets so bad they shut down. Thanks.

Simply put, it's a decision you want to leave up to the experts.

However annoying it is to find yourself stuck in an airport due to bad weather, the alternative -- flying in deadly weather -- isn't very appealing.

PS: If it makes you feel any better, winter closings are probably no more frequent -- and may be less frequent -- than summer closings. Violent summer thunderstorms are a major problem for the area's airports, and seem to occur more often than major blizzards.

It depends on more than the airport.

During the blizzard early this year (can't remember if it's Feb or Mar), all 3 major NYC airport were shut down for about half a day. But both JFK and EWR reopened in the afternoon, and CO (at EWR) and Jetblue (at JFK) operated a big portion of their flights, despite long delays.

European airlines arrived later in the afternoon than usual, and despite the delay, didn't cancel flights.

On the other hand, AA and DL cancelled virtually of their flights at JFK. LGW didn't reopen until next morning.

While airports in northeast close for surprisingly short periods of time, airline flight cancellations and major delays can occur with bad winter weather.

If you wanted to know about weather on Feb 2, perhaps you could get an advance report from a local groundhog.

PM, if you can't come a day early, take the earliest flight of the day.

NYC airports rarely close more than once or twice a year - and then usually for no more than 1 day. BUT - if it closes that means that flights are backed up for the next 2/3 days since all the planes and crews are in the wwrng places for the schedule.

And you won;t know the weather - really - until 2/3 days in advance.

If your flight is a MUST for making connections (to a tour or a cruise) I always reco flying a day in advance - since even weather in other airports or mechanical problems can easily delay you most of a day - esp in winter - even if NYC airports are open.

Thanks everyone. I will be flying to JFK then on to Tel Aviv, and yes I will be joining a tour in Tel Aviv. I had thought of coming to NY a day early to allow a better cushion of time and to allow a bit of sightseeing. Of course, one day in NY isn't much, but any time spent in NY is a treat. I'll give it some thought.

JFK will be a mess while EWR will be fine. You should have flown CO to TLV!

Just kidding, you know.

LOL, rkkwan.

If I were buying the ticket I would have flown CO for their good schedules. However this is a freebie w/AA, so I'm flying AA/El Al.
