Hey Austin folks, what are you wearing these days?

So, our week long Austin trip is no longer in 3 weeks, it's in 1, and since I have a very busy week ahead, I have to use today to think about packing and take down some spring clothes from the attic.

Problem being, with all the ice on our ground here, I honestly can't even remember what mid to high 60s feels like in terms of what to pack...are most people comfortable in lightweight pants? Shorts? Open toe sandals rather than sneakers/shoes? Are most wearing a sweater or jacket, or no?

I know we're all different but just looking for an idea...on same line, how heavy a layer do you find you need outdoors at night these days?

Thanks!

Check weather.com or something similar the day before you come and pack accordingly. I have been in Austin in February when it was absolutely freezing, and you needed coats, gloves, scarves, etc. Also been there when it's been 80 and you didn't even need a sweater and could wear sandals. The temperatures in Texas can vary tremendously, especially in the winter. This past week in Houston, I've generally been wearing jeans, light weight sweaters, and sneakers, with a leather jacket at night.

The weather here changes on a dime. This week it's 70's - but that might change when you are here. I agree, check weather.com

It's 75 today and I still don't wear sandals now, but others do. It was in the 30's this AM and it warmed up quick. I layer - light shirt with a scarf and maybe a sweater. Remove sweater, then scarf....

February is notorious for icy weather. And I remember 90 once on Feb. 28th.

The National Weather Service website will give you good up to date information. You can pinpoint Austin and get the forecast for the week. I agree you really need to check the current conditions just before you come, but also plan to pack layers. Have fun in Austin!

Thanks, all. I will definitely be checking weather, and although I don't trust the 10-day forecast too much, I did look just to get an idea. That's why I asked about what y'all find most people wearing in the mid to high 60s, because I figure so far that seemed the most likely - and I know it sounds stupid, but when it's been in the 20s and 30s with lots of ice on the ground, I find myself not remembering whether 60s usually means sweater needed or not, sandals leave feet cold or not, etc.

I know layers are ideal but I'm also trying to limit what I'm packing, so I just thought I'd try to get some reminders of what mid 60s feels like Just hearing what a couple of you have been wearing the last week, helps, so thanks for responding, especially when the question probably sounded a little silly!

Laura, looks like mid to upper 60's right now, but check right before you pack.

What are your plans in austin next week?

I didn't think the question sounded silly at all. Here in San Diego the day temps have been in the 60's and low 70's.
But it seems most of the people who live here are wearing long sleeves and closed toes shoes. I wore a light sweater today and was very comfortable.

The other day I was downtown and people were wearing everything from jackets to tank tops and flip flops (brr).

Yep - for those of us who don't live in cold climates, mid 60s is chilly and requires closed toe shoes and probably a sweater

Hi go_laura, I am in the Sacramento Valley in N CA and we are having mid 60's or so and we all still wear closed toe shoes and sweaters and at night a jacket. But if you are aclimated to real cold weather you will probably find the mid 60's quite warm but I would still take a jacket, you can wear it on the plane rather than packing it in your luggage.

Laura, yesterday we had 80. This morning a cold front - cold, windy. High of near 60.

A good, local forecast website:

Layers is definitely what you need. It starts off chilly in the mornings and then starts to warm up. 60's in Austin is warm only if there is no wind (at least to me!). But, everyone is different. You'll see people in shorts and others in jackets. I imagine if you get ice and 20's in the winter, you'll find 60's to be pretty toasty. I wouldn't recommend sandals though, especially if you'll be walking around. Just bring casual clothes that you're comfortable in. Austin is very laid back and casual.

Be sure and check the forecast the day before you come. You never know when a cold front will blow through. It can easily be 80 one day and freezing the next.

Laura,

Wondering if you'll be here on Valentine's Day? If so, Suzanna Choffel is playing at Momo's. She is really, really good. Here's her MySpace site:

Houston is having similar weather. I've been wearing light sweaters or long-sleeved tops with long pants and a leather jacket at night. I definitely would wear close-toed shoes in the 60s. We've had freezing weather in February and also 80s; it's just unpredictable. We had 40 degree temp drops in a day. That's just Texas weather.

Have fun!

Thank you so much, everybody, for being so helpful!!

Austin, I will come back tomorrow and say more about our plans for while we're in Austin...mostly arrived at by doing searches here.

And Austin Traveler, thank you for the music link, we *will* be there still for Valentine's Day (our last night there) and I'll follow the link tomorrow night and see how we like her (never heard of her, so it would be great to discover someone new for us).

Good night for now!
