HELP plan florida camping trip!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello and thanks for taking your time to read this. My wife and I are going to Florida in february. We want to escape this cold here in Ohio. We plan on camping the whole time to get reacquainted with the outdoors, we love to camp. We have a completely open itenerary and are looking for places to camp. We want to stay in south florida, because of the heat.(the warmer the better) We plan on trying to camp at bahia honda and we would like some ideas on other cool places to camp. Also any ideas on fun things to do in florida would be greatly appreciated. We are outdoors poeple. Please reccomend any campgrounds and fun ideas you may have. Thanks again,
Sean

you probably couldn't do any better than bahia honda. as outdoorsy people you certainly chose the right spot. drive to marathon or KW and rent a boat and check out the reef. or go kayaking in the mangrove forests. go fishing. see all of KW.........you are making me jealous.

I think Bahia Honda has the best beach in the Keys, so by all means try to get reservations there. Rent some bikes on Big Pine Key and ride around the Key Deer Preserve (almost the entire island) as there's nothing like having one of those little deer step out on the path in front of you. You can't feed them, but they'll probably lick your hands anyway!
Dive or snorkel Looe Key reef, too! I suggest going with Strike Zone, Innerspace, or Looe Key Reef Resort.

Consider a stop at Flamingo in the Everglades. Lots of great animals, you can rent canoes or kayaks. The camping is a little cramped (i.e., you'll have neighbors) but the natural surroundings are great.

Thakns for the great ideas. This helps so much. Theese all sound like great things. Bahia honda is booked, but the park ranger thought we might have some luck if we just show up. I guess they dhave a few campsites that are not reservable- whatever that means. Im sure it will be fine. Thanks again for the suggestions and keep it coming. Also i appreciate the referrals for snorkeling.

definitely bahia honda and the keys. thenwater might be cool for snorkeling, but if you do, take a boat (rent or do a snorkle trip) to looe key to snorkle. it gets full fast, bahia so make reservation soon. camping in florida is differ from north (i have done adirondack park, catskills, vermont, maine, etc.) no bears here (we have them but few), but lots of other critters, like gators and snakes. beach camping is safeest. inland swamp areas can be iffy. try also cayo costa, on the west coast, an island off of fort myers area. only can get there by boat, but beautiful. if not, definitely go south to key west, a fun town. where are you coming from and where have you camped?

I agree with Suzie...the Dry Tortugas sound great. I just checked their web site and unfortunetly the camp ground is "closed until further notice"

I think the Dry Tortugas sounds amazing. I called regarding the camping and was told the sewage line broke. And it would be fixed by summer. At that point camping will resume. Im just wondering if its worth the $180 round trip ferry ride, for a day trip?
The fort myers area looks nice, and i think we will go to cayo costa. With that said if anyone knows things to do in that area please tell me.
We have camped everywhere, Ohio, New york, California, Argentina. All over the midwest. If anyone ever goes camping to Niagra Falls Or Big Sur let me know. We found the best campground in Niagra Falls that is on lake Michigan and you can see toronto across the river. In Big sur we found a secret camping spot off the road, that sits on top of a 600 ft cliff overlooking the ocean. <---that was amazing.
