Help on AZ itinerary - White Mountains and Tuscon??
Our original plan was to do parts of AZ and NM. But after the research, we are rethinking and considering concentrating on AZ. Itinerary so far is fly into Phoenix, 5 nights in Sedona (VRBO), 1 night in Flagstaff area, 2 nights either Jacob Lake or GC North Rim (if I can get in), 1 night in Page (Antelope Canyon) before 3 nights on a Houseboat (family reunion), 1 night at Gouldings with Simpson's Monument Valley tour the next day, 2 nights Canyon de Chelly (reservations not yet made).
Then we are open, and could travel 1-2 more weeks. Again, our original thought was to go into NM. But maybe save that for another trip and travel into White Mountains?? (Is Alpine the place to stay, or VRBO a cottage??) Tuscon also looks very interesting (thanks to Mike). I do so appreciate your input!!

At the north rim, if you can't get into the Grand Canyon Lodge, try the Kaibab Lodge. It is just outside the boundary of GCNP and much closer than Jacob Lake. It is also in a beautiful setting, in a meadow in the midst of a pine forest.

When are you coming? It will start getting pretty cool at the GC and in the White Mountains by mid-September. The more populated part of the White Mts is around Show Low / Pinetop-Lakeside. We enjoy Alpine for a nice, quiet getaway. We have stayed at the Tal-Wi-Wi Lodge a few times. Not luxury accommodations, by any means. But it is comfortable, some of the units have fireplaces, and the owners are very nice.

If you are looking for more upscale places, check the town of Greer.

If you will be here in October, the mountains will be very cool. I do think October is the best month for visiting Tucson and Southern Arizona.
And thanks for the kind words.

Oct. is a perfect month for visitng Tucson and southern AZ. The weather is great and the "snow birds" are few. Tucson and areas south offer much. The Sonoran Desert Museum in Tucson is a must to learn about the desert quickly. There are many golf courses open to the public in Green Valley and Tubac plus many art/craft places in Tubac. White Mountains are great for summer and now, but will be cool in Oct. Can also walk into Mexico for a totally different experience at Nogales (passport not required but recommended).

Pam did not say when she was traveling but it would certainly have an impact on travel to the White Mountains.
Mike is correct that Alpine is lovely but it is a bit removed, as is Hannagan Meadows. Greer is great and in a pretty good location as far as getting to restaurants, grocery stores, and most of the scenic opportunities in the WM. There are less fancy places to stay in Greer, as well as upscale ones. You can also rent cabins if you are planning on staying longer or want your own place. BTW, some of the lodges there also rent cabins as well.
