I know this is a travel site, but have always found the people who post here so gracious and unbelievably helpful I thought I would give it a whirl. I am trying to help a friend plan an engagement party for 50 people in NYC. (Neither of us live in NYC). Does anyone know of an unusual venue for such a party ie - wine store, art gallery, loft, garden, hip rooftop club etc., yacht etc. I think the budget is fairly generous but not "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous". Not much to go on, but I have faith someone out there has a great idea. Thank you so much in advance!
HELP! me to find venue for engagement party

If I could have a party anywhere in New York, I would have one at the Metropolitan Museum of Art at the Temple of Dendur or the rooftop terrace.
Other cool places: The Rainbow Room, Asiate or Lobby Lounge of Mandarin Oriental, or the Russian Tea Room.
I'm actually doing something very similar for a friend right now. We're going to host the party at either Blue Owl or O'Nieal's Grand Street. The Bubble Lounge in Tribeca is an excellent place to do private functions. The going rate is around $60 per person for two hours, I believe.
Key questions:
What night do you want to hold the party?
How many hours?
What is the cost per person per hour?
Do you want to serve food?
Do you want a private room or a semi-private area? Most clubs will typically guarantee you an "area" with several tables, but not your own room.
I would also post this on Chowhound.com on the Manhattan bar. Sheckys.com also has a free party planning service. Go to www.sheckys.com/partyaid, fill out the questionnaire, and within a few hours you'll be contacted by event managers at multiple venues.
Good luck, and don't hesitate to post questions about specific venues on here. I'm a bit of a party girl, so I have pretty good knowledge of many venues in the city.
