Since you are in Kapalua, the best for breakfast and stunning views and outstanding food is the
Plantation House at the Kapalua Golf course..great place to recover!
How about a boat ride? or take the train..
Hula Grill is fun to be feet in the sand and have lunch..
Love the beach at Napili and the Gazebo is another great place on the water for breakfast/lunch..

Sorry to hear of the accident, not just a normal tumble either

Kahekili beach park is nice, at the north end of Kaanapali area, take a picnic or pick up one at CJ's Diner close by. The whole Whaler's Village area/Kaanapali Beach is good too, level access.

Understand re late departure, we've taken a room for an extra "night" a couple of times, well worth it. Where you are now might be able to help. If not there's a couple of places over by the airport whose names escape me but look at wizardpub.com for starters.

If your husband is so badly injured that he can't climb stairs then should he be going to the beach? He probably can't swim and getting up and down from a beach chair will be more painful than climbing stairs. There is probably not a lot that he can do, and only you and he know what his capabilities are.

And if you are going to rent a hotel room for your last day why would you not just stay at the same hotel where you are, rather than putting him through the move to another hotel?

Sorry about his accident. You also need to think about comfort on the flight home. Broken ribs are very painful since they hurt everytime one breathes. They probably discharged him with pain medication, but if they did not, call hospital back and get something or even call your primary MD at home - he may find seat position uncomfortable on flight without it. If they did not already tell him, people with rib fractures are at risk for pneumonia since it hurts to breathe and often because of this they don't breathe deeply enough. So even if it is uncomfortable, and especially on flight, do some deep breathing exercises and drink anough fluids.

Assuming you have a rental car, you could leave your hubby at the hotel to rest for the day and go into Lahaina for some shopping and sight-seeing.

I would definitely try to extend the hotel you are already at, for the one more day you need.

Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions. Yes, he definately won't be able to go in the water...but I think getting him out will do some good. He does have pain medication. Not enough if you ask him We rented our condo through VRBO and I contacted the owner and she so graciously said it was okay for us to check out very late as she has a day between renters to clean. I guess that is the Aloha spirit!? Luckily, I bought extra FF flyer miles to upgrade to 1st class for the trip. I know it will still be hard...but better than coach.

Thank goodness you will be flying home in 1st class and that the condo owner is allowing you to delay vacating the condo. My good wishes to both of you.

Well, sounds like you've already made the best of things. Best regards to you both. Thank goodness for that 1st class ticket homeward bound and late condo checkout. That should really help.

Maybe you could borrow a wheelchair at one of the hotels to do the ocean paths in Kaanapalli or Wailea. Explain to the concierge.

I'm so sorry to read about his accident. I would suggest a trip upcountry to see the winery. The drive is gorgeous. You could buy some nice sammiches at the deli across the street ( or bring a picnic) do the little wine tasting, and picnic on the grounds. It's not the beach, but it's very pretty and he wouldn't have to walk far.

Sofee - so sorry to hear about your husband's accident, glad you were able to upgrade to 1st class and that you're vrbo owner is so accomodating. My son got hurt three days before we were scheduled to leave Maui years ago. I called the airline and they provided a wheelchair escort at both ends of the trip. Believe me, it was a God-send. Also - we were allowed to pre-board, which helped a lot to get settled before everyone else was rushing onto the plane. You might want to check into getting a wheelchair escort - even though he can walk, it would make him more comfortable.

excellent idea above. definitely request wheelchair assistance thru the airport(s). i traveled once right before a knee surgery, i hestitated to do so, but it REALLY was a fantastic idea. call the airlines so they'll have one reserved for you (you get thru security real fast, get delivered right to your gate, etc.)
