We're travelling from Northern Minnesota to Washington, DC this week. A friend on the coast suggested that we avoid construction delay on the 90-80 route by dropping down onto state highways until we can pick up the interstate again.
Does anyone have specific suggestion as the best route to avoid said construction?
Help me avoid road construction on Chicago/Gary route?

Are you a AAA member? They do a good job of construction information updates and you can print a TripTik highlighting construction info or alternate routes.
My other suggestion to ensure you avoid the huge mess in Chicago is to time traveling so you are missing daylight, if you can come through in the nighttime, say after 10 p.m., before 5 a.m., you would miss a lot of the usual traffic. Good Luck!
