Help finding nice accommodation in Mystic on a tight budget?

Hi everyone, we are couple in our late 20's from northern ireland travelling to NYC on 21st June for 3 nights then hiring a car and driving to Cape Cod for 5 nights. We had originally planned to drive through Mystic, CT and spend the afternnon before driving to RI for the evening/night. We had thought we would stay the night in either Newport or Providence- before we drive on to Cape cod.

BUT we think we may now decide to stay in Mystic, CT for the whole day and night and do RI next day en route to cape cod.

We are on a VERY tight budget (and see we cant afford to stay in Newport!!), we need a place that offers free parking (as we will have our hire car). We are happy with motel or B&B, ideally would love a little charm etc but cant unfortunatley cant afford real luxury!

Can people please suggest some lodgings in Mystic? It will be for 1 night . Unfortunatley is a friday night , its at end of June. Thanks in advance! Sarah

It would help to know what your budget actually is - but there are a bunch of budget chain motels in the Mystic area that will meet the need for a basic room. B&Bs are typically more of the Inn type - and usually more upscale.

ideally budget would be around $100-150 for the night.

We would like to be able to walk into town in the evening (whichever town that may be!) Ideally mystic. But we can see it anyway- all we want is some nice town where we ideally walk and go for dinner/ drinks etc unless there is any other towns in the area that are not far from Mystic but also nice to look around that you would recommend staying in?

I know i say we are on a budget, but im coming all the way from northern ireland, i dont want to be having o stay at an airport hotel or anything!!

I had hoped for something along the lines of an Inn/B&B just for more character, but perhaps they will work out too pricey?

There are lots of chain motels that would be in your budget in Mystic. Just google, Mystic, CT lodging. They are mostly clustered near highway 95 exit 90 and there are several places to shop and eat within a couple of miles. There are also B&B nearby, but I would expect them to be a bit higher. Some of the chains advertize that they are in Mystic, but are actually quite a bit farther away.

You'll be sorry if you stay at the Howard Johnson. Absolutely horrible and the rudest staff I have ever met. We had reservations for 5 people. When we arrived, there was no cot, no blankets and no pillow for our youngest and since it was 7 pm they said it was too late for them to get them for us for the night. What? They absolutely refused.

michele- no HoJo's for us either we stayed in the one in Darien CT when our DD was working in the town.

One of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in (well there was the Premier Inn in Ascot last year ) Nah, the HoJo wins hands down

alya,
I went to the HoJo lobby to grab breakfast for the kids and didn't see any. And then I spotted it...1/4 of a mini donut on a platter in the corner. And this was 15 minutes after bfast was officially served. I asked if there was more and they just gave me a sarcastic look. What a joke. By far our worst hotel ever in the entire world.

michele, the funniest thing is that Darien is one of the most affluent towns in the USA and one of the most expensive to live in and the only hotel they had was a crappy HoJos.

It appears that it has closed down now. Phew! No more sticky carpets.

At least the Premier Inn gave us a refund

Looking at Mystic lodging or hotel on Google is a good place to start, but you are not limited to chains or twee B&B's.

In the US, there are still motels that are not part of chains but are operated by individuals or families. Look for a recommendation by AAA (the American Automobile Association). These recommendations don't assure charm, but they do assure that the place is clean and as advertised. So look for the AAA logo. But do not book through the AAA website; that is another story.
