Helicopter or fixed-wing tour over Kauai?

We're headed to Kauai this spring and trying to decide between a helicopter or fixed-wing tour of the island. I've read dozens of different opinions claiming that one or the other is best. We have a son who will be nearly 8 at the time we travel, and I understand that the minimum recommended age for helicopters is usually 7.

Advocates of fixed-wing flights say that the risk of getting a middle seat on a helicopter is not worth the cost, since most take 6 passengers at a time and we are a group of 3. Copter proponents insist that the fixed-wing experience can't compete with the ability to hover, swoop into craters, turn around on a dime, etc. One thing we're sure about, though - we do NOT want to go for the doors-off option. If it were just my husband and me we might, but we would not feel comfortable doing that with our son aboard.

Cost will not be the deciding factor. That said, if the helicopter experience isn't worth the big difference in price, we'd opt for the less expensive plane tour.
