Health insurance for Europeans travelling to USA

We have friends visiting from Italy in August for three weeks. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good company that would cover a family? Some policies cover just medical needs, others include travel insurance. I am looking for reviews or experiences to help narrow the choices.

They should start checking on their side.

I have met many European visitors whose health is insured while here on the same policy that provides their other travel insurance.

Many of them belong to travel clubs, outdoor organizations, automobile clubs, mountaineering societies that provide this kind of insurance at laughably small cost, certainly much less than they could get it for here.

Yes, they definitely don't want to buy it in the US.

Right, you can't buy a policy in the US that would cover them. Perhaps you should post this on the Europe board, and one of the resident Euros will be able to make recommendations for such a policy in Italy?

It seems like I've seen several times on the Europe board when Europeans were shocked at how expensive it is to be travel insurance in the US (about 10 pct of your coverage amt), they always seem to say they get coverage for an entire year for very low amounts. I'm pretty sure I remember Britons saying that. Of course, even in the US, travel insurance isn't that expensive if you just want to cover a minimal amount of fixed costs and then you get the medical with it. The cost is really driven by the dollar amount you say you want to cover. I buy it mostly for the medical and lost baggage/delay stuff and put in a very low amt of dollar coverage.

Europeans traveling to US, purchase health insurance in their home country to cover length of trip from their own health insurance/government coverage.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I will refer your answers to them. I think they are most concerned about medical costs for any accidents. I did see some travel policies that bundle some coverage with various baggage, trip interruption type policies at low cost. They are travelling from Italy. Maybe I will post this on the Europe forum, but there are several websites that compare travel insurance.
Thanks again.

Just don't use American ones.

Right. To be crystal clear, do not send them information about policies sold in the US--they will be of no use to them.

My SIL's grandfather has come over twice from the UK. He is in his 80s and his health insurance is $800--the premium was based on age. It MUST be purchased in the home country. Americans can buy travel health insurance for a lot less, but OTOH, we pay monthly premiums, compared to free or low-cost national health insurance in the UK or Italy.

Not if they're over 80, they can't.
