Hawthorn Suites or Embassy Suites in Corpus Christi

Can anyone give me information on the Hawthorn Suites or Embassy suites in Corpus Christi. I am relocating my lodging from the beach into town. Does anyone know which is better, and are these two located in a relatively safe part of town?
Thanks for your help!

Hi Ski4me--wish I could be of more help but I am unfamiliar with these properties--I looked them up on the web to find out their location but have never been to that area of Corpus. I'm assuming you're looking at Suites for the extra room they provide. I found a map of Corpus / Padre Island that shows the names / locations of accomodations, including condos, in the Corpus and Padre Island area--if it will help, I will list them for you, just let me know--I'll be leaving soon but will check back this afternoon.

Thanks dcespedes. I originally posted looking for condos on North Padre/Mustange island. I changed to staying in town b/c I just can not justify $325 per nite for a 1 BR condo even if it is on the beach. Maybe at a really good beach, Florida, Hawaii, or major resort area, but not Mustange Island... I like the area, but I'll just stay in town and drive!! I can get the Hawthorn Suites 1 BR w/living room for $98 per nite. I really was just interested if anyone knew if it is an ok area or nice hotel. Do you live around CC or just travel there? I also am looking for really good places to eat esp seafood that are on the inexpensive side. With 3 kids I don't plan to go anywhere really fancy. Also, do you know anything about the dolphin cruizes or any others that kids 6-12 might enjoy?
Thanks!

Hi Ski4me--actually my husband and I live in San Antonio (15 years, originally east coasters) and get to Corpus / Mustang Island @ once a year. I'm curious to know when your trip is scheduled? I will get back with you on inexpensive, good restaurants--there are quite a few--as well as the dolphin cruise. Check back in a day or two for information. It's too bad someone from the Corpus area isn't tuned in to the Fodors forum, huh? I will help you as much as I can.

We are going to be there in early June, I have booked, but may have to change the dates alittle.

My sister lives in San Antonio, and I was just there at spring break. I am one of the "older" college students. I returned to college to get my RN after my job with a large telecommunications company was sent overseas.

I really love SA! My parents are down there right now drinking a Shiner on the River Walk. Even though it is a tourist place we still like the atmosphere of the outdoor restaruants. When you check back to give me advice on CC, let me know if you have favorite places to eat in SA also!

Thanks!!

Hi Ski4me--we love the River Walk downtown and the weather, as of Saturday morning, has been beautiful--hope they enjoyed a nice visit. Following is some info on Corpus that will get you started--I would ask the staff at the hotel for more info if / when you need it. Things to do with the kids: check out www.dolphinconnectiontexas.com for dolphin interaction / cruise info; USS Lexington, Texas State Aquarium and there's a Museum of Science and History and Ships of Christopher Columbus, and of course there's the beach! Also, you can rent bikes and ride along the seawall in Corpus. There's an HEB grocery store on South Padre Drive, before crossing the JFK causeway bridge, where we stop to pick up sandwiches, etc. to take to the beach--and there's a KMart next door if you need sunscreen, beach paraphenalia, etc. There are a lot of places to eat in Corpus and the places we've had personal experience with and can recommend are Snoopy's Pier 1 (S. Padre Island Drive under the JFK causeway bridge--very popular; burgers & seafood); Sea Island Shrimp House (5425 S. Padre Island Drive); Joe's Crab Shack on N. Shoreline Blvd; Landry's next to Joe's Crab Shack; County Line BBQ on Ocean Drive.
Re: San Antonio, our favorite places to eat, in no particular order, are: Biga on the Banks, Boudros, and Rio Rio (Riverwalk); Chris Madrids (best burgers!!!), Chesters, Texas Hamburger Company, Rudy's BBQ, Asia Market, Acadiana, Canyon Cafe,, Los Barios, Pappasitos, La Fogata, Tomatillos, and the list goes on so I'll stop! I hope the info I gave you on Corpus proves useful, at the very least it should get you going in the right direction! June is a nice time of year to be at the coast--it's not too hot, the jelly fish haven't emerged....hope you enjoy a nice trip! Take care!!

Hello ski4me! I lived in Corpus Christi last year, so I thought I would add my opinion. Both the Hawthorn Suites and Embassy Suites are "inland" on South Padre Island Drive. They are in fine parts of town, but basically you'll be along a freeway. (No scenic views or walking to the shore, but easy access to the highway so you can get to the beach). My family stayed at the Hawthorn Suites while they visited and it's really nice. The rooms are nice sized, clean, not fancy, but comfy. They have a nice breakfast in the mornings and the common areas are nice. I would recommend it.

As far as restaurants go, I second the suggestion of Snoopy's--it's great! The food isn't spectacular, but the setting is. Your kids will enjoy watching boats go by and being just underneath a large bridge. Joe's Crab shack and Landry's are okay. There are a lot of great seafood places in Port Aransas if you make a day trip up there. Also, don't miss "Whataburger By The Bay." It's right by the marina and is the "flagship" Whataburger--you can sit outside on the balcony and watch the water. It's fast food, so it's cheap, but you can't beat the location! For nicer options, try Mama Mia's downtown and Yardarm on Ocean Drive ($$).

Oh, and definitely take the kids to The USS Lexington--it's amazing (even for "big" kids).

Dcespedes, thanks for the restaruant info! We'll be sure to check some of those out. I am also very glad to hear that the jellyfish will not be out yet! Travelisfun, the Whataburger sounds like something the kids would enjoy, is it in CC or PA?
Thanks
