Can anyone tell me what to expect, weather-wise, of Hawaii's Big Island at Christmastime? We have tentative plans to go there for the holiday but we're wondering if it will be too cold to snorkle. Thanks.

Mike,
The weather is likely to be warm enough - but you may find the water a bit chilly. I live on Oahu and have been out in the water in the 'winter.' In December you can get a mix or warm and cold weather(cold being relative -say 70 degrees). The air temp also depends on what part of the island you are staying on. However, you may find the ocean to be a bit cold in December. A lightweight diving/snorkel shirt can make it bearable if you plan to spend a lot of time in the water. Hardy northerners also may not be too bothered by the water temp.
For historical weather information you may want to look at worldclimate.com to get a more accurate sense of the average temp.
The Big Island was a favorite Christmas destination of ours when our kids were small. We used to stay at the Mauna Kea (but there is a minimum stay). It was a wonderful alternative to Christmas in the snow of Chicago, but I recall on more than one visit it rained--once for several days. I have photos of my son and his uncle scuba diving--with the top halfs of wetsuits, so it must have been a bit chilly. Nothing on their legs, however.
Why go to the big island? Maui is far more beautiful and has better beaches. The lava on the big island is just unattractive.
