Do you have an idea of which island, how long are you planning to stay, what time of year, what busget, condo or hotel? I think we need more to go on from you. Also, the types of activities your pre-teens are interested in.

Going with what we have Waikiki has the most things and options of where to stay and what to eat. The zoo, aquarium, Bishops museum, Iolani Palace, Aloha Tower and marketplace, Ala Moana Center, these and much more in the Honolulu area including Chinatown.

Lots to do on Oahu:

Bishop Museum now has a volcano house where kids can create volcanoes & tidal waves.
Polynesian Cultural Center has many activities & demonstrations for kids.

We've taken our kids to Maui twice. They really like it there. There is a nice mix of things to do. We have stayed in Kaanapali both times they came with us but it was the off season so there was pretty much no one there. If you go in Jan/Feb the area might be crowded from people trying to get away from the cold. Early Dec would be better.

On Maui, I think a condo complex in Kihei, Wailea or Makena would be good. Those three are both on the sunny south side and would cover all budgets. Great beaches and water sports/ activities. Oahu would have more cultural activities, in addition to beaches and water sports, reference Dusty's post.

Maui is a great place for families. Kihei seems to be the center of the condo action. Hale Pau Hana is right on the beach and has one and two bedroom condos. The Ka'napali Beach Hotel on another part of the island (great beaches) has hotel rooms but no kitchens, but is really family-friendly.There's plenty to do on the island - big rentals, hikes, surf lessons, -- as much or little as you want. It's more reliably sunny than the other islands, or so it claims.
The big island is gorgeous, and some of the resorts have condos as part of them, such as the Mauna Lani (pricey but great). There is plenty to do on the big island - touring the volcano National park, horseback riding, bicycling. There are fewer good beaches, but the resorts are usually on the best beaches on the island. The Kona-Kohala coast is the best place to be.
Oahu/Waikiki is the classic high-octane beach scene. Kids love it but parents often don't because it's so busy. But it is really fun, and Oahu does have more cultural activities.

Meant to suggest that you check out familytravelforum.com for other ideas and more information on travel to Hawaii. You reallly can't go wrong with any of the islands. It's one of the best places to visit with children that we've ever gone, and we far prefer it to the Caribbean, because you don't need a passport, it's exotic and tropical, and it doesn't have the edge of some of the Caribbean islands.
A couple of other ideas of hotels (you might be able to get refrierators for breakfast making) - the Hilton Hawaiian Village on Oahu and Grand Wailea on Maui have tons to do for kids - check out their websites - also Hilton Waikoloa Village on Hawaii.

last April we took our 14 & 12 yr olds to Maui, stayed at the Grand Wailea..on the advice of the CFO of the Outrigger Hotels...who told us years ago when bringing kids there is only 1 place in his mind to stay on Maui. he was so right. yes, it is very expensive and in fact more now that Hilton has acquired the hotel, but truly the ultimate experience for all of us. i am having a tough time planning our next trip to Hawaii or anywhere else for that matter that will match that one. i am pretty much resigned that we peaked in our family vacation experiences w/Grand Wailea.
