Hawaii, January 2017.

I'm reluctant to suggest an inexpensive vacation, having last years equated to a poor women with a baby, but I can take the hit. LOL

Anyways, San Diego on Jan. 26th at a Marriott for 2 nights, one with points and the other with dollars.

Will meet with friends.

Then Oahu on Jan. 28th at the Sheraton Princess using dollars for 3 nights. Other friends will be staying across the street at a Starwood.

Followed by 5 nights in Kauai, Jan. 31st thru Feb. 4th at the Sheraton using points. With friends for 3 nights.

Finally on the way home in San Diego at a Sheraton Feb, 5th and 6th using points for 2 nights.

Will meet with friends again.

No questions yet, but just wanted to get this started. We attempted Diamond Head last January and made it to very last climb and my wife was flustered. We will make it to the top this time

Jet Blue R/T to San Diego is now at about $336 PP R/T. [Jan 26th--Feb. 7th]

Then R/T on Hawaiian Air San to HLM to Kauai, to HLM and then San is about $600 R/T [Jan 28th-Feb. 5th]

Seems reasonable??

Oh, I do need to rent a car on Kauai, probably priceline.

P.S. Yes, if there was any chance of a meeting with a Fodorite, it would be lovely.

Richard

Richard, you do know that it is sometimes rainy in Hawaii at that time of the year? OTOH, you might see lots of rainbows.

Hope you have a super time. I love Hawaii.

Try www.discounthawaiicarrental.com, they are a wholesaler and rent from the major companies. Or Costco if you are a member. The problem with Priceline or Hotwire is you usually have to pay up front. With DHCR you can keep checking prices every few weeks and if the price drops, which they often do, you can rebook.

Ditto on the DCHR recommendation.
Where are you planning on staying in Kauai?
Drier in the south, as you probably know.
Haven't finalized our plans for early 2017 yet. Lots of planning fun to come for me.... enjoy yours!

I stopped at the last stop before the steps to the very top of Diamond Head, but my DH and DD completed it. I was nearly at the top, and told myself the view was just as good!!!! May attempt it again when we are there just prior to Christmas this year.

Carolyn--thanks.
jamie99--will look at that site for a car rental, thanks
kanunu-south Kauai it is!!
nelsonian, that sounds like where we had to stop, as my wife was feeling the heat. She is determined this time to get to the top.
Shar, my mistake--HLN
suze; yes

Not too much to add from my initial comment.

The Marriot is at Liberty Station and seems very nice.

On the way home in San Diego we will stay at a Four Points. It was going to be 2 nights with points, but now will be points [3500]and dollars [55] for each night.

Actively now looking for air fare and car rental for Kauai.

This trip is for my wife's 80 BD in 2018, although we pulled it in a year, because we are not sure how Marriot will change the Starwood SPG system and points.

Happy Days, 6 months and counting!!

How about HNL?
3 tries for a quarter!
Not sure if you have yet considered getting a Costco car rental quote, as jamie mentioned above. Many have had good luck on Hawaii rentals with them, and I recently got a good deal from them, though not in Hawaii.

Hi kanunu; I have not looked at car rentals yet, but will surely look at Costco.

Concentrating on air fares.

Thanks

Hi sylvia3--Thanks much.

So far I am looking at this flight schedule from BOS and timing/arrival is everything.

1. One way Jet Blue, non-stop and arrive in SD at about 11:30am on 1/26[$168] PP

2. One way returning home on 2/7, non-stop, Alaska Air, arriving in Boston at about 5pm. [$168] PP

3. Then I found Hawaiian Air SAN to HNL to LIN to SAN for about $560 each.

So the total fare would be about $900 PP and seemed really good.

The only reason I didn't book was we want to get back into SAN during the day, but could only find something after 9:30pm.

The numbers worked and we may just bite the bullet and book.

I'm from Boston area also. I begrudgingly booked the quickest timed trip for $1150 each r/t for next weeks departure to BI. I've never paid more then $850, but alliterative flights were many hours longer in layovers.

One thing about the perfect flight. That is what I booked. And twice the airline changed flights on me. The first cost me an hour earlier departure and a later arrival. The second took me from leaving 3PM and arriving 5AM (perfect time to take the commuter rail home) to 11PM arriving 5PM (the worst time to take commuter rail home)

We lucked out as our rental isn't booked on the day of our return, so our host has graciously allowed us to check out in the evening and have housecleaning turn the house around the next day.

Get a rental car on the books. They do run out. And then monitor it. It is one of the few perks left. Bookind/rebooking and canceling all without a credit card.

Hi; Yes, booking flights can get so convoluted. I think in end, we will take the flight from Kauai back to San Diego and accept the late arrival time.

Thanks
