Hello,
I am currently planning my next set of holidays and was hoping to visit Hawaii. Neither my boyfriend or I have been before and are really keen to get there.
We are thinking that our first 6 nights will be spent in Waikiki where we will explore around that area, head to Pearl Harbour etc.
We are then thinking of getting a flight with Hawaiian Airlines to Maui and spending 3 nights in Kannapali where we will just relax on the beach, snorkel, kayak etc.
Then flying back to Honolulu for one night before coming back to Australia.
As I mentioned we have never been before and are unsure about the best islands to visit so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I think the opposite is a better plan - 6 nights in Maui and 3 nights in Waikiki.
March is a great time to visit Maui as the whales are still hanging around. I would highly recommend a Whale Watching Tour. (We used the Pacific Ocean Foundation.) If you're looking for outdoor stuff, hiking, surfing, etc will be great.
That said, if you're more interested in dinners, drinking, and nightlife than 6 days in Waikiki is the better option.
We stayed in late March for 7 nights in the Wailea area. Lots of activity in the daytime. Not a lot of nightlife.
I strongly suggest you plan on renting a car. We didn't do the Road to Hana but that is a must for a lot of people.
I love Oahu and I think a few nights there is perfect for first timers. Just be sure to rent a car and get outside of Honolulu for some time. There are beautiful places to go on Oahu.
Maui is my next favorite island and I agree with Ryan, spend more time there. The whales are faboulous.
My two favorite places on earth are Maussane-les-Alpilles in Southern France and the North Shore of Oahu. I am not sure I could do 6 days on Waikiki. My wife and I will spend two or three nights down there, but that is about all we can handle. We then like to retreat to the North Shore for reading, surfing, and the beach.
In March the weather is likely to be nicer in the Wailea area or if you are renting a condo, look at Kihei just north of there. And you do need a rental car on Maui.
While I personally love Waikiki and can easily spend 10 days there myself, I agree with the suggestion for your first time to flip things around. 6 days on Maui, 3 on Oahu. See if you can plan your flights so you connect directly Honolulu/Maui to avoid that single night there either at the start or the end of the trip (which to me is a waste of time, money, energy).
Yes, great idea for the flight connecting to Maui that same day. (Depending on where you are flying from, you might be able to fly direct to Maui.)
I got off an 11 hour flight from NY with a 9 and 8 year old and connected on an 8:45 flight to Maui. While exhausted, waking up there was a big benefit instead of having to do another airport the next day.
Instead of 6 and 3, I'd split it more evenly and do 5 and 4 (four for Oahu, 5 for Maui). Three is pretty short, especially if you are doing the three the first part of the stay.
