HAWAII-first time! need advice!

Next April we will be going to Hilton Waikolai Village on Big Island=Hawaii. After 6 nights there, we'd love to try something more luxurious and more romantic-perhaps on another island? We're going there b/c of our free points...has anyone been there? can anyone recommend any other hotels/island that are top of the line luxury (5 star-conde naste etc....) to go to as well in Hawaii?

Janie you have to go to Kaui it is sooo beautiful. I do not know of 5 star places because I am too cheap to spend that kind of money. The sheer beauty will really wow you though. Sorry that I could not be of more help.

Bev, I don't know about Kauai. I heard that it is highly overrated. So much so, I have to go over each year just to make sure that it's not. ;^D

As for luxurious, romantic the usual Hyatt, Princeville or maybe a secluded house up in the Haena area or better yet, Anini?

I've stayed at the Kahala Manderian Oriental. It is located in an very nice residental area minutes away from Honolulu. This hotel has the nicest rooms, and a private beach. It is very romantic and beautiful. The Hyatt in Kauai is also very beautiful, but is may be like the Hilton Waikolai Village. Maui is a nice island too. Last time we were there we stayed at the Westin Maui. Rooms were nothing special but it had a great pool and beach. This summer we are going to stay at the Hyatt Kauai and The Kea Lani Suite Resort. We have never stayed at the Kea Lani but I know we will like it. The suites are 850 square feet, has a private beach, and breakfast comes with the room. Last time we were in Maui we parked at the Grand Waliea and walked to the Kea Lani's Nick's Fish Market. Staff was very friendly, food was great, and they gave us a free limo ride back to our car. We were impressed! People recommend the Four Seasons Maui for the ulimate in luxury, but I think the Kea Lani sounds like a better value. My advice is that there are alot of nice resort in Hawaii ,but avoid Wakkikii unless you like very crowded, and touristy. The rest of Hawaii is better. Kauai is the most beautiful island I've been too!! You have to see the Napali Coast to know what I'm talking about. Maui has great resturants, shops, activites and the road to Hana, and my favorite restaurent, Roys'.

janie, We are also going to Hawaii for the first time this Aug. Kauai. Though we have friends who live there we preferred something quiet & romantic. Heard about a place called Glo Manor. It seems to fit the bill. We booked 6 nights at 75.00/night for a private cottage. It almost sounds too good to be true but our friends there said it looks great! I'll try to remember to e-mail you after we get back. Jeff

I cannot stress this enough... go to the Four Seasons in Maui. I can't tell you what a truly luxurious experience it is staying there. Maui is beautiful and the Four Seasons is located on a quieter more romantic side of the island. Arrange for the hotel to make you a picnic basket and do the road to Hana... but don't turn around at the end... continue on the back road for a breathtaking (although slightly scary) ride through the most unbeleivable scenery you can imagine. As far as Kauai, it is an absolutely beautiful island... the Na Pali Coast is unforgettabel. But, there aren't any fantastic resorts. We stayed at the Hyatt, which maybe was ruined for me after the luxurious Four Seasons. It's a pretty hotel, but very noisy and big and caters to the business conference crowd. I think it's nice, but so overpriced for what you're getting. For over $550 per night, I was disappointed with the service, the rooms, and the atmosphere, especially compared to the Four Season, where if you do a mountain view room, it's only around $315 per night! At the Four Seasons, we had an ocean view club floor room, which was fantastic (but expensive... we didn't care because it was our honeymoon) but next time, I think I'd save money and go for a mountain view room (I recommended that my friend do that, and they upgraded her for free anyway!) Princeville in Kauai is very opulent and some people love it, but I found it stale and depressing. The Hyatt at least has a beautiful open air lobby filled with plants trees and even some tropical birds (they are not in cages so they are sometimes out roaming). Princeville is totally closed up and full of gilded everything... not at all Hawaiian feeling. Also it's on the rainy side of the island (it rains every day). I've heard that a great romantic place to stay in Kauai is Gloria's Spouting Horn B&B... we didn't get a chance to check it out, but I would definitely try it on my next visit (plus it's very close to the Hyatt, so you can head over there for spa treatments!) Whatever you decide I hope you have a great time!
