Hawaii -- I'm clueless
Hard to pick a title for this one...
I have a one week "lay-over" in Hawaii while traveling to my new home in Brunei & no idea what to do.
The group is 2 adults and 2 kids (4 years old & 3 months old). We'd prefer to stay in one place & rent an apartment with kitchen and such. We'd also like to see some neat stuff, relax a bit and NOT go wild with surfboarding and parasailing -- kids too young. Baby-friendly beaches and simple tours (no hiking up a volcanic crevasse) with proximity to shops and such.
Please give some guidance. I have never been there or thought about going. Which island & why? What location & why? Please don't recommend hotels or restaurants -- not necessary.
Thanks & sorry if this is a bit broad topic-wise,
Craig

Lots of families enjoy Waikiki. Waves are usually mild because it is on the leeward side of the island, not like the rough beaches at Waimea and Sunset.
You would probably like a day at the Pollynesian Cultural Center. They cater to all ages and it is a "feel good" place.
Have fun.

Not a troll.
Thanks for the advice. Thinking Maui & someplace relatively quiet with a rental car.
Anyplace I should stay away from w.r.t. heavy surf or beaches that aren't "kid friendly"?
>>> I got a job posting in my company to Seria, Brunei (currently I work in the Netherlands) & they'll let me go via Hawaii (and San Francisco and the Pilippines). I had no plans to go there, but will do if someone else is buying the tickets.
Bedankt,
Craig

Craig, I get the feeling you're the one who's been posting for the last week with a lot of these "Help me visit Hawaii" "What to do in Hawaii?" posts. There've been a real load of these lately and I'm blaming you for them.
Can you read? This site will tell you what you want to know. Just click Destinations and read a little.

Craig, I suggest you check out the Hale Hui Kai condos on Maui. They're in S. Kihei, right on a beautiful beach which has very gentle waves and would be ideal for your kids. The web site is www.beachbreeze.com. I also like the Mana Kai condos which are almost next door, on the same beach. I think the interior layout of the Hale Hui Kai would be more suitable with your small children, though. Stay away from Big Beach in Makena. It has huge, very strong waves. Most of the Wailea beaches are very nice. Have a lovely time in Hawaii and good luck in your new home.

Thanks for the helpful answers. I have chosen Maui and am on the hunt as to where to stay (some promising apartments are out there).
This is the only thread I am directly responsible for on Hawaii.
Yes, I can read and write. Yes, I did read the Destinations info and it told me SOME of what I wanted to know. I then asked my remaining questions here, in the forum. Nowhere in the Destinations info or on the numerous other WebPages I've surfed have I found any advice as to where to start. Hank sent me in the direction of Maui & for good reasons, thanks Hank. Barbara gave some good advice on beaches to avoid with a young one, thanks Barbara.
I've been posting to the European board for a while (since '97 or '98) -- I know how to "work" the Fodors site and the web. I think this is my first post to the US forum -- strange that I switched on so many billy goats Gruff.
If I were posting items relating to "lice from the tanning beds", or "I was just at X and I think it is too built up now, what do you think? or "Anyone have a disappointing travel spot they'd like to share?" I would be a bit worried that someone would mistake my post for a trawl or teaser.
If I think something is a trawl I don't even nibble and I let it drop away on the boards. When my advice has been along the lines of RTFM I give it gently, without assuming anything about the poster or their motives.
Once again, thanks for the advice on Hawaii, folks. Maybe I'll be able to give some help if you are traveling to Europe soon or South East Asia in the near future...
