Have you seen Blue Man Group? Pls answer only if you're over 35

I was thinking of taking the kids (16, 14 and 11) to see Blue Man Group when we're in Boston, but I don't want to go if it's going to drive my husband and I insane. Is it migraine and seizure inducing, or is it tolerable for the over 40 set? (I've seen them on Tv, but of course, that's a totally different experience.)

Well I saw it when I was 27 and thought it was migraine and seizure inducing. Most people I talk to loved it though so you may want to suck it up and bring your kids.

I saw them in Minneapolis. Maybe I just don't get it; but when you take away the Blue Skin-it's just a lot of loud, uninteresting music IMHO. And I've never been interested in solo drum music. They don't speak, so you read a teleprompter the entire time. Like I said, maybe I just don't get it.

I do not like crowds, loud noises, flashing lights - and I found Blue Man Group in Boston enjoyable - even very very funny. I suggest you get a seat further towards the back and certainly outside the "splash zone".

I'm with Gail, I enjoyed it - I found it fun and a great time with my kids, who were your kids ages at the time and I was about early 40's - it was not migraine and seizure inducing for me, but I don't know how you take to the noise, some flashing lights, etc - Gail is right though, we were almost in the back row and still had fun and didn't risk splashes.

Check out the web site, see what you think.

However, at 11, 14 and 16 if you really don't want to go, my opinion is it would be fine to escort them to the theater and meet them at the door when it is over. I am thinking this might be part of a larger trip - but I don't trust my memory, but is this part of a summer driving journey thru Massachusetts?
If so, at htis point, maybe you and your husband will want a few hours of alone , adult time?

You and your husband can do something else if you really don't want to see it - snag some alone time- get them matinee tix and have a nice lunch or evening tix and have dinner nearby (some nice spots like Avila, 28 Degrees) are a stroll away - or if you want to all eat together, stroll thru the Public Gardens and Boston Common and have a drink somewhere - mabye a drink and appetizer at Avila's bar which is around the corner, and then meet up with them for dinner at PF Changs or something like that -
there are tons of things you could do while they do that - and after they can tell you all about it at dinner !

My father & I saw them in LV (i'm 35, he's 60) There are parts that are really fun and interesting, and other parts that I didn't get "what the big deal was". But, we were both certainly glad that we went. It was a fun show. If it is really horrible for you, go have a drink in the lobby until it is over.

I am WELL over 35, saw Blue Men in Boston, and maybe half of the audience was over 40. Interesting show for any age.

Now, that it's not so fresh in my memory, let me see if I can find my report.

Hi missypie,

Different strokes for different folks, maybe it was our mood at the time but we don't understand the appeal of the BMG. We saw them in Vegas and I found myself wondering why. We clearly are in the minority as they've been around a very long time and recently made an appearance on the Today Show. No, we didn't find the show migrane or seizure inducing, lol, we just didn't get it but maybe there's nothing to get. We're very open minded and I'm a big fan of contemporary art but their show just seemed completely pointless and uninspiring. Perhaps someone can enlighten me.

Here it is:

So hard to define what they are! The closest in my opinion would be: men clowning around with all they can find: drums, food, toilet paper. They pour liquid paint on the drums, and continue drumming. The first 4 rows downstairs were covered with plastic robes. They play with food, so those of you with sensitive stomachs: don?t have dinner before the show ? you may leave your food there And don?t plan a large dinner after the show ? you may lose your appetite. Still I?m telling you it?s lots of fun!

Some things are hard to see from each seat, so a camera man is there to project the Blue Men on the screen. A couple was late to the show, so they were shown on this large screen, and everyone was clapping and cheering them on till they got to their seats! Was I glad I made it on time

At the end the ushers start pulling the rolls of ?toilet paper? down on the balcony public. The paper is special, you can?t rip it. So we started to push it down. People sitting downstairs tried to move it to the stage. At the end it was a white sea, and everyone seemed happy.

I saw people of all ages, from teens to retired. Or what you call it, ?silver? age? Anyway, it?s fun, and I recommend to visit. Language-wise it?s a clean show, I would bring children along.

I am passing on a friend's experience: she (40) and her older sister and their mother loved the show, laughed until their faces hurt, and highly recommend it. This was in Vegas; they "hate Cirque du Soleil", and so didn't consider seeing that instead.

Myself, I love CdS, so maybe I'd hate BMG??

WEAR the earplugs! Seriously. They even have a sign suggesting people wear them. I think my oldest was 19/20 when we saw them and he was the first to put them in (had a bad concert experience once and had ringing in his ears for a long time). We all wore them.

Other than that, we loved the show. My DH pretended to be asleep when the Blue Men started scoping out subjects, lol.

I've seen them 3 times in New York city and loved it each time!

One reason that some folks might not have the same attitude IF they saw the show in Las Vegas is due to the size of the venue. In NYC [and I believe the same is true in Boston] the show is in a very small theatre and the intimacy of the theatre really made the show very fun and you were really able to feel a part of the show [even if you aren't in the splash zone] as the guys come right into the audience and pick members of the audience to include in the show. [You are supposed to wear a paper bow tie on you if you want to be included, however, I've seen them take folks who didn't tie the bow on].

I believe the venue in Las Vegas is huge by comparison and that changes the feel of the show, maybe making it less fun and making you wonder what's so funny.

IMHO, of course. Oh, I am over 35. Heck I am over 53 too!

I loved it.. but then I love just about any new experience.. I have seen them 4 times.. and I have taken my kids ( 14 and 16).. It was great to watch the expressions on my kids faces and the laughing they did. I would go again in a heartbeat. And I have seen Cirque 3 times - loved them too.. Blue Man Group is an assault on your senses but it is something to be seen and heard. GO !!
by the way - I'm 50...

My mom is in her 50s and she liked it. But then she would crack up at the question of if it is tolerable for the over 40 set. Like you get old and lose your appreciation for drum solos? LOL. She still subscribes to the notion that if it's too loud, then you're too old

I don't see the big deal with Blue Man Group. It was loud but that didn't bother me any (I saw them when I was 42). My kids (12 & 14) thought it was good not great. There were times I was kinda bored actually. I agree with the idea of dropping your kids off if that feels comfortable for you. People did get splased sitting in the front.

I'm definitely over 35 and saw it w/o kids. Didn't have a problem w/loud noise, but then again we weren't sitting that close.

It was Ok. Just Ok. My husband liked it more than I did, and I think your kids would like it. And I don't think it will drive you insane.

We took our 13 and 14 year old sons over February vacation. We had seen it before and liked it and we thought they would too. They loved it.
