Would appreciate help with proposed trip to Alaska without benefit of a tour. When would be the best
time of the year to go? Also, any hints for planning the itinerary of such a trip would be helpful. We will fly to Alaska..unless you have a
better idea.
Have you planned your own trip to Alaska

My husband and I were in Alaska this time last summer for about 11 days. We flew in to Anchorage and rented a car. The best thing you can do is get the Alaska "Milepost" book--it's a "bible" for Alaska travellers. You can get it in the travel section of any bookstore. It literally covers every highway in Alaska--from frost heaves to Post Offices to gas stations and restaurants. A must see is Denali National Park. You will need to make reservations for the bus trip into the park. A great little motel near the park is the White Moose Motel. Otherwise, get the Milepost and use that to plan your trip.
We're not campers, but I do recommend renting a motor home from a company near the airport in Anchorage. It will allow you to travel all over mainland Alaska and see what you wish when you want. I recommend early june or late August or September. Do go to Homer and either deep sea fish or salmon fish on the Kenai (I'm not sure when the salmon run. we were there in June). The bus trip to DeNali is a must (reserve in advance. We also enjoyed whitewater rafting at midnight in DeNali. Hiking the glaciers near Anchorage--one north and the other south at Portage. Motels/hotels are not great and for $150 a day, you can have a home with cooking priveliges and wheels. I never thought I'd see myself in a motor hooome, but I'd do it again tomorrow. Been to 73 countries in my 51 years, and the Alaska trip is in the top 3. Go for it. Milepost is qa must. You can get it everywhere from Waldens to Amazon. Yes-----it's a must
Irene, If I could suggest the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry system for an alternative. Depending on where you are arriving from, this can be a great trip. The ferry stops at many smaller towns and villages along the inside passage and you can get off and visit for a few days wherever you want. Doing a little research over the net about this transportation system might convince you to thnk about going this way. There are lots of people and sights and you can even rent a small cabin for your comfort. Check it out. Have a great time. Frank
