We have to be there for four nights while son is in lacrosse camp. Looking for a charming hotel or B&B nearby. All I can find on tripadvisor are a Quality Inn and a Hampton Inn with so-so reviews. We'll spend more for a good place. Is Providence our only option?
Thanks
Have you heard of Smithfield, RI?

Is Providence our only option?
Almost certainly. It isn't very far away, and the Smithfield area is not a destination for many people.
Another possibility is northeastern Connecticut. This area, centered on Putnam, is almost unknown and is very beautiful. I know there are country inns around there, but this is day trip territory for us, so we haven't paid much attention.
If your son is busy all day, be sure to take a trip down into Tiverton and the "quiet corner" of southeastern RI: rocky shores, quaint villages, and several good wineries. A great day trip.
