Has anyone stayed at the hotel Helmsley in New York City?

I am going to NY at the end of the months and of course I am looking for a reasonable rate the Hotel Helmsley at 148 E 48 has a 250 rate through Venere.com. has any one stayed there ? Tripadvisor has good and terribly reports.

Isn't it notorious for having a bad bedbug problem?

I don't know about bedbugs, but that particular Helmsley is not great and that price sounds very high, esp. for July. Go to quikbook.com and have a look at other options. The NY Helmsley on east 42 st is much better than what you're looking at (the Helmsley Middletowne). I see the Eastgate Tower has a rate of $189/night on quikbook with a stay of 3 or more nights. The Shelburne Murray Hill is owned by the same co (Affinia.com) and is a bit nicer for a bit more.

YOu should also check reviews on tripadvisor.com for anything you're considering.

Last time I was there (2-3 years ago?) it was so bad I wrote to Leona and demanded a full refund for both rooms for 3 mights - and I got it. LOL

Really, it was horrible. Ick.

^^^ Oh, sorry I was at the one on 42nd and 3rd...

That said, years ago (like >20 years) the Middletowne was a great little hotel. (And actually, the NY Helmsley, then called The Harley, was also good.) Peaceful and clean. But the problem is that the Helmsleys have not had 1 penny put into them since then.

Lots of folks think it's just fine
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev..._New_York.html
but it may be a moot point b/c it appears to be booked solid for July.
