Earlier this afternoon I go the same ad 3 different times - once US, once europe and once for the Lounge. It was a close up of a gun in a holster and an ad for holsters for hand guns - and mentioning "carry" permits. These guns are illegal here, can be carried only with permission of police after an extensive background investigation and proof that one needs it (sometimes given to diamond merchants or similar) and I think it is totally inappropriate (never mind in incredibly bad taste) to allow for such a thing.

Each time I was given the option to comment and selected "inappropriate" but it kept coming back.

I highly resent being subject to ads for this type of product - just as I would if the ads were for porn sites.

Am going to complain to the editors.

So they are not illegal, just strictly regulated.
Instead of wasting your time complaining to Fodor's about advertising they have no control over, I suggest you download AdBlock. It's free. I see zero ads, of any kind.
Btw, porn isn't illegal, either.

I doubt Fodor's would ban the advertisement of a legal item. I dislike a lot of things but I don't expect websites to know that. AdBlock is your friend, here.

I get all sorts of ads - either travel related or associated with web sites - items that I have searched for. Have no problem with this, and in fact like to see ads for discounts on web sites that I use. Obviously I have never visited any web site that has anything to do with guns.

Are you suggesting that Fodors doesn't have control over ads that appear on their site? My understanding is that they are receiving income from these ads and should be able to control who the advertisers are.

This has nothing to do with constitutionally protected free speech, which only prohibits the government, not private web sites, from "abridging" your rights. If Fodor's has allowed the ads (taken the money) and it's not a hack, then you (and I, because I don't want to see them either, legal or not) and I can complain, or leave the site, but we can't stop them from appearing. P.S. I have not seen them, I must have an ad blocker.

Fodor's has a corporate parent that determines its advertising. So no, the editors to whom you would write have no control over what you see, and given the technology of advertising today, I doubt any actual person really does.

If you want to express your displeasure at this ad, go ahead.

If you want ads to stop interfering with your enjoyment of the website, use AdBlock.

nanabee, that is not what the right to free speech means. It's a common misconception, but no less shocking for all that.

Also: although I can tell you that AdBlock makes your pages look nice and clean, with no weird gaps or other unpleasantness, people here seem oddly nervous about it. So why not try it, and uninstall it if you don't like it? You can go back to the way things were if you find yourself, inexplicably, missing ads.

I have no problems with such advertising. The NRA has taken NYC to court and won. They have to relax the standards to conform with recent Supreme Court decisions and NYC citizens will finally be able to carry firearms after taking the course.....something that criminals dont do.
