And, I meant to ask this....

Hana Ranch Restaurant and Hana Ranch Store. Are these 2 separate entities?

Hana Ranch Store and Hana Ranch Restaurant are two different places. One is the, well, a store, and the other is a restaurant.

The restaurant, the store and the hotel's Ka`uiki Dining Room and the Paniolo Lounge are all on the ground of the Hotel Hana-Maui. We like the Hana ranch Restaurant and have dinner there a couple of times a year. They serve big portions of locally grown food.
I have read here many negative statements about the place here, but how many of these people have ever actually eaten there? Try the breakfast there. The loco moco and the French Toast are both great bargains for $5.

The Koali Cafe is not much and not accessible right now. It is next to the Kaupo Store.

Tutu's is an institution at Hana Bay, but no more than a snack shop. The food is bad to awful and we eat there ecerytime we go to hana. DH is enamored with the loco mocoand

Laulima Farms is a fruit stand at an organic farm, but, again, I don't know if you get there from here right now. It is in Kipahulu.

Up in Smoke is at Nahiku nearly an hour out from Hana. So is the Nahiku Cafe. Both at the Nahiku Gallery. In my opinion neither would be worth driving back for, but you might like stopping along the way.

Uncle Bill's Lunch Wagon used to be parked out by Hana Bay all the time, but honestly I have not noticed it for a while.

Thank you.

Does the Costco have prepared foods? Salads, pasta dishes, rotessiere chickens? Fresh fish? What about their fruits?

I guess what I am asking is....should we stop at Costco before heading to Hana for 3 days or is it a waste of time? We'll need bottled water and the like.

Costco has the roast chickens. I don't shop at Costco for much other than paprt products and business-related stuff since there are only two of us, but the last time I bought potato salad there it came in a 40 serving tub.

Are you going right from airport to Hana? You can make a quick side trip to Safeway in Kahului, a few minutes from the airport. It would probable be quicker than Safeway and they have a nice service deli.

Yes, kinda straight with a detour in Paia and/or maybe lunch at Haliimaille General Store. Really depends on how the time is for for getting rental car, etc.

If we don't stop along the way how long will it take us to drive from Paia to Hana? We are actually staying 3 miles past Hana Town. And, I would like to get there before sunset. Flight arrives at 12:15.

Safeway probably makes much more sense than Costco.

Thanks....any other tips? You have been great to help me.

Go to Safeway, and if you don't have a shopper's card, take 30 seconds and fill one out. Buy an expandable cooler, ice, and stock up!

wow, looks like part of my post is missing!

I went on to say that Costco does have good fish, but you have to buy 5 pound chunks. A better place to get fresh fish would be on your way through Paia stop at Nagata Market. I never buy fish at Safeway.

Costco has fruit by the case and Safeway sells mainland fruit. But along the way to hana you will pass several places to buy local produc. Twin Falls is the first large fruit stand along the way and if it is getting late I'd just stop there. If you have some time though you can get a better deal at other stands further up hana highway. You will also see many honor stands in hana town.

iceeu2 -- when are you going? Thought I'd ask, because Bob and I will be there this coming weekend...

As for dining -- Hana Ranch Restaurant is mauka side of the highway (across the street and kitty-corner from Hotel Hana Maui). Dine in -- or get takeout from the adjacent plate lunch place. We like both of them.

Hotel Hana Maui breakfast is delicious -- pricey, but what the heck. Dinners are pretty good too -- but waaaay pricey.

Uncle Bill's Lunch Wagon has never been open when we've taken the drive -- Nahiku Cafe is a fun, funky place to stop and eat.

Those are the only ones I can give my own opinion about -- have a _great_ Hana visit. Where are you staying? And are you coming to Kaua`i??

hanasheaven.com

Yes, we are coming onto Kauai. Will be on Kauai from April 1st-April 11th. That is unless the real icee's employer sees differently. Lots of plant closings going on....geez.

We are gonna stop in Oahu for a few days and bug MelissaHI for a couple of hours. Then 3 days in Hana and 2 more in Wailea.

Not arriving on Oahu until March 25th, so you have lots of time to give me all kinds of great info...specially if you and Bob find some great place this weekend.
