Halekulani Dining - Orchids vs. La Mer
We're staying at the Halekulani and were interested in eating at either Orchids or La Mer. Can anyone contrast the food, atmosphere and dress code. I've heard La Mer is jacket "suggested". Would prefer not to wear one, but don't want to feel out of place either. Appreciate the thoughts.

La Mer is located on the second floor of a beach front building (2 or 3 stories) on the beach. It is quite formal - the lanai tables are very romantic. When I've been there I've never seen anyone wearing a jacket - but a collared shirt for men is required (e.g. a button down) and also, I think, a tie - which is super formal by Hawaiian standards. The food is french and quite good. The bill for two, including 2 glasses of wine was something like $150+. I haven't eat at Orchids, but my understanding is that it is slightly less formal. I've heard very good things about this restaurant. Since you are staying at the Halekulani then why not swing by during the day and check out the menus, the restaurant set-up, and make up your mind after you've had a chance to see which place you'd prefer?

We at La Mer two years ago. The bill for three people (one was a vegetarian who had an entree only) was over $400. Incredible table overlooking the ocean in an open-air dining room. Impeccable service and great deserts. Worth the splurge if you can afford it.

Thanks Happy Camper and Scigirl. HC - did you notice what the men were wearing?
Agree on your logic Scigirl, just want to make the decision on whether to take a sport coat and tie (don't want to if can avoid as we pack LIGHT and carry on but would hate to miss out if it's amazing).

WOW! Alan - thanks for pointing out the obvious. So many websites are vague, I sure wouldn't have expected to find the complete menu and dress code.
Had to laugh when I found our room code denoted by an * as not being visible on the map. We'll be down by the boiler room.
Can't wait to stay there as friend's rave about it.
