haleakala and hana driving?????

If I start out early enough from Kahalui, can I do Haleakala and then have time to drive Hana Hwy? I don't need to spend a lot of time at Haleakala, just enough to take a few pictures.

I would be shocked if you did. First once you get up to the top of Haleakala you really are awestruck at the view. It is 37 miles of driving up and then coming down another 37 miles. Depending on your time you may run into the tons of bike companies bringing their customers down. Hana is the windiest road in the world and is very dangerous. No guard rails and if you make a wrong turn you are in the ocean and I am not kidding. The minute you think the road to Hana gets easy then you mess up. You have to take your time and be safe on that road. We took a tour bus and I was very happy to pay for it. Do yourself a favor take time for both.

I forgot to mention that I have driven hana a few times about 10 years ago. Is it really 37 miles to Haleakala? Is that from Kahului? Or is the 37 miles just the uphill part?

I was thinking about doing a day trip from Honolulu. A day trip with Roberts or Polynesion Adventure runs about 260.00 per person. That would be 260 for Hana and 260 for Haleakala combined with Lahaina. That's 520 dollars. I checked a roundtrip (same day) ticket and right now they are about 143.

As far as day trip prices I don't know what is good or bad. But going down or up the hill is 37 miles one way and I did ride it down about 5 years ago on a bike like everybody else. Saw the sunrise and to be honest it was a heck of a sight to see that is why I encourage you to take it in. It is not one of those keep the engine running and let me hop and snap a couple photos. From what you said you have been to Hana a few times so you should know that road pretty well.

We have also done the sunrise 3 or 4 times, the bike down once, and sunset once. I think it might be 37 miles from the hana hwy, but it could be from the actual turn itself. The drive to hana is not that bad if you take your time and are not tired. It would be a long day and not sure you would get to see that much at either if you are in hurry. To go to the seven pools, the church, the beach, and to see a little of haleakala, would take some time.

HI I asked the same question before we left three weeks ago and was advised against it. The road to hana took us two and a half hours from Kanapali and the drive from Kanapali to the top of the crater was 2 hours each way. We just stopped for a few pics. We chose to split it up on two separate days and I am glad we did. The road to hana is long and winding and we left the hotel in Kanapali at 8 am and returned at 1Pm and that was just driving just before hana we stopped and turned around. We stopped maybe 3 or 4 times for pics of waterfalls or to buy banana bread at Keanu peninsula(that was our favorite stop) so doing in two half days was better. Have a good time

We did both in one day. We left Kaanapali at around 7 and drove to the top of the crater. It was cloudy and rainy by the time we got up but still awesome. The road to Hana is great but unless you want a picture of every single waterfall and every bridge and lookout, you can get it done in one day. We were back to kaanapali by around 4:00. We did just go to hana and not past becuase it was pouring! So we didn't see seven sacred pools or any of that.
