Gulfport in Mid-March/weather/condo info???

Have exactly 24 hours to cancel a timeshare reservation. Can someone tell me if the weather is warm enough for shorts and short sleeves? I realize it will be to cold to swim in the gulf. Also, has anyone stayed at the Chateau Charmant? ANy help welcomed.

Are you talking about Gulfport, MS? If so then the weather may or may not be warm enough for shorts and short sleeves. It just depends on whether or not a cold front comes through. March on the Gulf Coast is very, very iffy, at best. That's my weather prediction!

Yes, Gulfport, MS it is. Do you live the area....can you tell me if the area is a nice place to visit for a week? We are not big gamblers and it appears that's what people go for.

I don't live in the area but I've been there a few times. I don't think I would want to spend a week there but others may have a different opinion. Sorry I can't help with specifics.

No you do not want to spend a week there BUT
New Orleans is very close by-thats good for as much time as you want.
Ponchatoula/Covington/Mandeville La are all close
Bay St Louis is worth a half day. Pass Christian--you MUST eat at the Harbor View Restaurant--you will never have better fried shrimp. Also eat at Mary Mahoney's in Biloxi
Mobile is 2 hours
I don't know if the ferry runs to the National Parks on Ships Island in Mar. but check on that
So you can go somewhere everyday

Hi traveling mama
I went to Gulfport/ Biloxi for a long weekend and might be able to give you a few ideas. As Fairhope said, Bay St. Louis is worth at least a half day trip--the "downtown" arts district is great--right on the bay and full of shops, little art galleries, and restaurants. Do have lunch at Dock of the Bay Restaurant. I can't speak for the Chateau Charmant--we stayed at the Comfort Suites in Biloxi and found them quite acceptable, although, for a week, a condo would be a nice choice. If the weather is fine, you can take the "Duck" from Biloxi for an hour and a half tour. (we signed up for this but Tropical Storm Arlene cancelled us out!) You sign up for the tour at Sharkheads beach shop in Biloxi.
Ocean Springs, just over the bridge (east) from Biloxi, is worth a stop--again, lots of shops and little art galleries. Eat lunch at Aunt Jenny's--superb fried chicken, catfish, and shrimp in a lovely setting.
Even though you are not a gambler (our group isn't, either) it's fun to explore the casinos--Beau Rivage is quite spectacular. Also, there may be some shows worth going to at the casinos while you are there. And, as others have said, New Orleans is only about an hour and a half away, Mobile 2, so Gulfport/Biloxi might be a nice base to see several things. Hope this helps

I live in Long Beach, MS, between Gulfport and Pass Christian. I understand The Dock of the Bay restaurant in Bay St. Louis is under construction because it was sold to a new owner.

I, too, love The Harbor View, but remember, they don't take credit cards and it has limited seating capacity. You may have to wait for a table. (Breakfast is amazing there! Their shrimp poboys are legendary.)

There's also a relatively new restaurant in the Long Beach Harbor area. Been here just a few years. It's "Long Beach Lookout" and the food is excellent, there's a quaint bar, and it overlooks the water. Excellent food, attentive staff, and the chef has a weekly TV segment. It's become very popular. A little more expensive than most local restaurants, but comparatively, it's far more reasonable than places like Mary Mahoneys!

From the "Long Beach Lookout" menu:

Grilled Trout with Roasted Garlic Scampi Sauce $18.95

Seafood Platter $17.95

Fried Catfish Platter $10.95

Crawfish Etouffee $12.95

Grilled Shrimp $14.95

And a lower priced "Children's Menu".

Also "Steve's Marina", in the same area. More ambience and friendly service, along with excellent food. It's owned and run by a family from New Orleans.

From Steve's Marina menu:

Jumbo Shrimp, fried - with fries and a house salad $12.95

Shrimp Remoulade $7.95

Seafood Gumbo - cup, $3.95; Bowl $6.95

Red Snapper Cat Island, with sauteed shrimp, crabmeat, artichoke hearts, and mushrooms in a lemon butter sauce over pasta $18.95

Speaking of New Orleans...... across from The Dock of the Bay in Bay St. Louis is a casual restaurant with wonderful food! It's Trapani's, written up in Southern Living magazine, and run by a couple of guys who moved there from New Orleans. Be sure and try the Shrimp Remoulade.

From the menu:

Shrimp Remoulade (appetizer) $3.95 Order a "double" and it's a full meal!

Shrimp/Broccoli Fettucini Alfredo $9.95

Seafood Platter $12.95

Catfish Platter $7.95

Club Sandwich (excellent!) $5.50

And there's a "Children's Menu", with lower prices

And, if you want really casual, you can't beat L'il Ray's, a Coast institution, with locations in Waveland, Gulfport, and, near me in Long Beach. They have benches and serve fresh seafood daily. Right now crawfish is in season, and big platters are served at a very reasonable price. You can always get platters of fresh boiled shrimp, and they are in season now too. The price, if I remember correctly, is something like $6.95 for a dozen, $9.95 for a dozen and a half....fresh off the boat. The shrimp poboys are to die for! And you can get beer and Barq's root beer, and, of course, sweet iced tea.

From the L'il Ray's menu:

Shrimp Poboy: 8" $6.35, 12" $7.95

Seafood Platter: (3 fried shrimp, 3 fried oysters, 1 stuffed crab, hushpuppies, hot buttered French bread, and either Cajun new potatoes, Wedge potatoes, Cole Slaw, or Potato salad) $13.95

Grilled Shrimp Salad $7.95

Crab Fingers $6.95

There's a "Children's Menu", very reasonable prices.

All of these restaurants have a lower priced lunch menu.

There are a couple of places here that are "tourist traps", but I'd rather not mention them here. The ones I have mentioned are the ones the locals frequent.

You'll love it here!
