How about going toward Florida a few miles to Orange Beach? It's much less crowded...the Phoenix are all nice condos, especially the newest.
I do not have the phone numbers, but most of the condo rentals are handled through Kaiser Real Estate and Meyer (sp?) Real Estate (both also handle rentals for Orange Beach). Either one or both may be on-line. Word of warning though, if you are going around July 4th, most will already be booked for that time.
Gulf Shore is very nice, also Orange Beach which is the next beach down and Perdido Beach which is next to Orange Beach, but in Florida. They all kind of blend together now. Perdido Beach is the least crowded, but you would have to go into Pensacola or Orange Beach/Gulf Shores for anything besides hanging out at the beach.
Emjoy your time there!
There is a large outlet center a few miles north of Gulf Shores in Foley, AL. Also suggest you drive over to Fairhope, AL and see the Grand Hotel. Lovely grounds but expensive to stay there.
Correction-- the grand Hotel is at Point Clear, not Fairhope.
Try Gulf Shores Plantation about 15 minutes West of Gulf Shores on Ft. Morgan Peninsula. Well-managed and off the beaten, crowded path. Many different types of accommodations to choose from--condos and beach houses. secure and safe, too. Good luck!
