Gulf Coast Texas or not?

I will be driving from Ontario Canada to Grand Canyon. I have extra time enroute. I've been through most of Texas, but not the gulf coast. With only a day to spend in that area, is it worth the drive out of my way? Perhaps Moody Gardens - Galveston area? NASA tours are not available when I would be passing through.

Otherwise, I would head straight across, and go perhaps to Canyon de Chelley (been there before) and Antelope Slot Canyon,Page Arizona.

Thanks for any suggestions.

The Texas Gulf Coast has some beautiful places, but Galveston is probably not worth the extra miles you would drive to visit. There are prettier beaches and clearer water in many other places. Not to be too negative about Galveston, but it's not too spectacular either.

Agree. You really have to get down to North/South Padre Island before finding very nice beaches and water. Plenty to do in Galveston (Moody Gardens, the Strand district and historic homes, sailing ship Elissa, RR Museum, etc.) but I wouldn't drive far out of my way for the beaches.

Galveston doesn't offer much to see or do. The beaches aren't that nice and the water isn't very clean so I'd pass on Galveston. How about Zion National Park or Bryce(sp?) Canyon?

don't know what else you are planning to see--but there are many things close to the grand canyon in n. arizona and s. utah, and in s. colorado, that are very interesting.

Thanks all. Zion is by far a fav of mine. Will re-attend there again sometime hopefully soon.
Had a good trip. Ended up driving to the Texas coast enroute to Grand Canyon. Poured rain through Houston & area. Took a brief walk on "the strand" Galveston, headed over to Corpus Christi. Went to the aquarium and the USS Lexington. Had a great time riding the mule to overnight at Phantom Ranch. Fainted at the bottom on my mule! Great storm chasing week out of Oklahoma City & covered 4,500 miles or so that week with Tempest Tours. Lots of lightning & good cloud formations. No actual tornadoes seen during our week. Would go storm chasing again in a heartbeat. Great way to see the backroads.
