My husband and I stayed at Grove Park in 1994 as one leg of a three-week East Coast trip that we took for our 25th anniversary. The setting is just beautiful, and the terrace restaurant has such a terrific view we ate there every night. The golfcourse is HARD! Up a 100 yards, down a 100 yards, and by the time you get to the greens you're exhausted. God how I admire all of the Blue Ridge golfers - that's real dedication!
On that trip, we stayed at some of the nicest hotels and resorts we've ever been to including the Waldorf in New York, and the Grand Floridian at WDW. It was the honeymoon we never had. Frankly, the Grove Park Inn just couldn't stand up to that competition, but it was nice, and I'm glad we stayed there once.

I stayed at the Grove Park Inn and I really enjoyed it. It is not an opulent place, but has a very nice lodge atmosphere with great fireplaces and porches. The Sunday brunch is terrific (as one guest put it - "it is like the feast at a Ukranian wedding") and the view from the restaurant is great. The rooms are not spectacular, but nice. One thing to consider before you go - they are doing construction on a new spa addition. Construction may not be completed by September - nothing like a big yellow crane to ruin a nice romantic getaway. So you might want to check on this before you go!

I have stayed at the Grove Park Inn, many peoiple like it, I thought it was overated. Just a regular hotel with a big fireplace. I have not stayed at Richmond Hill but have had a great dinner there. the restaraunt is superb. The Inn looks like it would be charming to stay in. I would stay there next time instead of Grove Park

Richmond Hill has rooms in the main house...haven't seen those, or units on 2 separate parts of their property. We stayed in one of their "Croquet Cottages", charming little one bedroom cottages with standing seam tin roofs, and wide porches bordered by English Garden type plantings--NOT primitive in the least. The interiors were beautifully furnished. Our unit had a gas fireplace with tile surround, bookcase wall, bead board panelling,4 poster bed and an English-style bath more opulent than any Ritz Carlton or the like we've ever stayed in.
The grounds are beautifully landscaped as well. Afternoon tea is served in the main house in front of their huge fireplace.
We had tried to get into Grove Park, but this was a last minute trip and they were full. If we ever returned, I wouldn't even attempt Grove Park, we were so taken by Richmond Hill! A very romantic stay (even for a couple married 31 years. gt;)

The Richmond Hill is beautiful; the in-house rooms are (or were) named after Southern writers. We did have to carry our own luggage to the third floor, which left me hurting. The restaurant was wonderful with wide windows overlooking the mountains and a menu equal to most large cities. You should go inside the Grove Park though just for a peek. The two are so very different. You are doing Biltmore, I hope. It is hard to believe such a lifestyle.

They are very different. I've stayed at Grove Park; my sister has stayed at Richmond Hill; both were happy.
Grove Park is very large and includes both an old section (rooms have Mission/Arts & Crafts furniture, built-in dressers, casement windows and tomb-like bathrooms with footed tubs; most rooms open onto an indoor courtyard, with wicker rockers and settees on the bottom level -- oh yeah, and one room is haunted!) and a new section (typical upscale hotel rooms). There's also a new spa to complement the existing golf, tennis and other sports facilities.
The Richmond Hill is smaller and fancier, with fewer activities (no spa or sports) but more intimacy.
Both are going to be driving distance from anything else in the area that you want to visit.

My husband and I stayed at the Grove Park Inn this past winter during the holidays. I absolutely loved it! The place was decorated beautifully for the season with rows of Christmas trees and lots of gingerbread houses. The massive stone fireplaces were spectacular. The view was great. I'd love to go back there when the spa is completed - double check because I think it was to be done this summer. The food was wonderful and the setting was great! I would highly recommend it.

Terry=Hands down the Richmond Hill Inn-very romantic ,elegantly furnished BnB--Grove Park Inn is dowdy in comparison--Only thing at Grove Park that is impressive is the huge stone fireplace living room in the main lodge--rooms need major refurbishing--not worth the price.

Recently stayed at the Inn on Biltmore Estate. Wonderful! Have stayed at Grove Park in the past, and enjoyed it, but the Inn at Biltmore has it beat. The rooms are fantastic, the staff wonderful and the food was superb! You can check it out on the Biltmore Estate website.

My husband and I stayed at the Grove Park last year and I probably not stay there again. The lobby is great but it is always over-crowded and the rooms are not anything special. They were still doing construction at time so maybe things are different now, but I would not pay to stay there a second time. I would however have brunch or dinner there during your visit.

My husband and I have stayed at both, and we prefer Richmond Hill. The restaurant is top notch - I had one of the best crab cakes ever. Our room was in the new addition and opened out onto beautiful gardens. The Grove Park is much larger, and worth a visit just to see. Also, Biltmore Estate is a must see.

I like them both. I would rather stay at the Grove Park, because I'm an arts and crafts-mission-bungalow-cotage fan.
I suspect most people would prefer the
Richmond hill. If your not into arts and crafts style furniture the Grove Park might seem a little dark and old. Richmond hill is probably a little lighter and airier. Different strokes for different folks. However, both are a welcome departure from Ashville's usual phoofy, doily filled bed and breakfasts.
