I don't know if there are any "cheap" stores in Hawaii given that everything costs a little more here, but Safeway (national) and Foodland (local chain) are the two big players. Their locations tend to be in the residential shopping centers. In Waikiki and the resort areas, ABC stores are everywhere. They are much smaller and carry basic foods, snacks, sun tan lotions, beach towels, gifts, etc. Enjoy your stay!

Are you really in downtown Honolulu or central Waikiki?

In Waikiki, I always use Food Pantry on Kuhio plus the ABC Stores (because I'm on foot and they are close).

If you are located in Waikiki and need something quick and/or are without a car, the ABC stores and Food Pantry will be most convenient. The prices will however, be a bit higher than if you went to a larger grocery store.

The closest regular size supermarket to Waikiki is the Safeway on Kapahulu Avenue, I believe.

Many of the larger supermarkets - Safeway, Times, Foodland - have free "club" cards that you can sign up for to receive sale prices on certain items. Go to the customer service counter and sign up for one when you get to the store.

I'm terrible with directions.

However, if you have a vehicle there is a big Walmart not too far from Waikiki.

Walmart
750 Keeaumoku St
Honolulu, HI 96814

(808) 942-4089ý

Google it for directions.

It does have lower costs on cosmetics, SPF, etc. I don't remember if it has groceries (meat, veg, eggs). It did have snacks, chocolate macadamias, etc.

The ABC stores have lots of things (at a high cost). And there are a lot of them. Some are a lot larger and nicer than others (and have more things and better variety).

Have a great time in Hawaii.

If you are military/ex-military or have DOD Commissary benefits, head to Hickam. From what I recall, the commissary is outside the installation and much cheaper than anywhere else.

There is a Sam's Club on top of the WalMart mentioned.

There is a second Food Pantry on Hobron Lane if you are staying on the Ala Moana end of Waikiki.

There is a Foodland in Ala Moana Shopping Center if you are staying on the Ala Moana end of Waikiki.

I disagree that everything at the ABC Stores has a high cost. I have found them quite reasonable on many items, some items cheaper than the cost at the grocery store.
