Greenbrier?
Any thoughts as to the Greenbrier? We currently have reservations for a 4 night package in June (2 adults, mid-40s, no kids), and we are wondering whether the Fodor-folks have had good or bad experiences. Any opinions or input would be greatly appreciated. Is this place worth the price?

Hi. I spent a long "spa-weekend" at the Greenbrier with my friend. (My husband was very happy not to have to accompany us!) It is a very nice place and the food is excellent. Comparable to what we can get at well-known restaurants in downtown Phila. This was my first spa experience and the massage package was wonderful. Since then, I have had 4 more massages, and Greenbrier had by far the best massage and the best overall ambience. (We were in Sandals in February, and supposedly the readers of Conde Nast magazines voted their spa the best in the Carribean. That makes me highly suspect reader's polls, b/c the spa experience at Sandals I thought was sub-par. It wasn't the whole pampering type of experience like at Greenbrier and the massage wasn't anything to write home about. And yes, I realize how pompous it sounds to complain about a massage!)
OK, that being said, the Greenbrier is incredibly expensive. We flew there using my husband's FF miles, and still the final bill left a pit in my stomach. Yes, the level of service is nice, but really, I can carry my own cushion to my pool chair, I don't really need someone to do it for me. Everything was just soo expensive - even the tour of the governments bunker there.
I was glad I went, but I would not go back, given the price.

My wife and I met a friend at the Greenbrier in February and had a great experience. My wife took her mother there 2 weeks ago and they had a good stay too. Yes, it's pricey, but it's also like stepping back in time. They just don't build them like that anymore. The food is excellent, and the staff that we came in contact with were top notch.

The Greenbrier is a one of a kind resort property. It is worth the price but it's quite expensive. Figure $400+ a night for the room, at least $200 for dinner for two, $100 for lunch two, $50 for breakfast. Their spa treatments are among the best. To go and not have one makes no sense. Figure around $120 (includes tip). Then there are tours, tennis, bike rentals, croquet, etc. These are all a la carte activities and can add up as well. I guess the real question is do you have that kind of disposable income. If you do, it's worth the experience, IMO.
