Great Time in South Haven's Yelton Manor

Thanks to all for recommendations... here is a detailed report if anyone's curious.

First, I'd like to say it was our (F 30 and M 38) first time in South Haven, and first time at B&B.

We normally travel to warm destinations and stay at large resorts, so I was a bit apprehensive... I was proven wrong!

Yelton is truly spectacular. We stayed at the Iris suite, which was most comfortable, spacious and intricately furnished room one can imagine, completed with a large bathroom that had a pedestal sink and a whirlpool tub + euro style shower attached. All is immaculate; the bedding is lush and the bed itself is soft yet plenty supportive. Daily housekeeping staff is doing a great job maintaining rooms and the entire building.

The decor of common areas is warm and inviting. Many antiques and little curious chatchkies are to be found there. Tons of little nooks to cozy up and chat or read. The library is most extensive - and I am not just speaking of romance novels - name a subject, there is a book.

You have many choices of seating for your hot breakfast, including 2 gorgeous rooms looking out into the gardens (we aren't gardening type of people, but oh my.... what array of colors! We even enjoyed relaxing on a garden swing for a minute, and bringing one of our lunches to the gazebo.

The breakfast itself was delicious and fanciful - variety of fresh fruit, hot egg dishes, French toast, sausage, ham, and your standard fare like cereals, juice, coffee, etc.

The afternoon treats looked great and I wish we tried them - unfortunately, we were always full of fresh cookies and brownies that are found sitting in the hall at any time of day.
Caution: limit the number of your trips through the common area. I think there is a huge magnet pasted under the sweet trays, causing you to stop even when you have no intention to eat more.

For the location of Yelton Manor - unbeatable, as you are just literally minutes away from downtown shops, restaurants, cutest marina harbor, parks. Best yet, it's across the street from a very nice beach - just few steps down the boardwalk to the sand. Some of the beach on either sides is private, but you can park your chair or towel right across Yelton. The stretch of the beach is walk-able for miles.

We visited over the 4th of July weekend, which was fairly busy in South Haven, especially Saturday prior (ok, it was the greatest number of people I've ever seen in a small town... imagine 10 rock concerts just being let out), yet it really wasn't bad for us (though I hate crowds with passion, unlike my boyfriend). Saturday felt a bit spring break-ey. However, no one was excessively loud, even the drunken college/high school kids were mostly well-behaved. The fireworks were fun to watch on the beach, despite the crowds - plenty of space for all. While back at the Manor, we were not bothered by any noise at all. I'd say the building isolates outdoor sounds really well.

If you value peace and detest chaos, Yelton is cat's pajamas. Travelers beware: some B&Bs, while advertising as "couple retreats", do allow children - some over 12, and some over 7 years old - as if these are magic ages when antics and whining become less annoying. If you aren't traveling with a family, stay away from those. We had the most obnoxious family of 5 park next to us on the crowded beach once, which made going back "home" to Yelton's tranquility even more delightful.

Overall, we had such fun time in Saugatuck. Checked out the marina, jogged along tree lined sidewalks (very runner-friendly, relaxed on the beach, watched a few phenomenal sunsets, visited nearby winery in Fennville (map and directions conveniently provided by Robert), drove to a u-pick orchard and bought some goodies to take home - including four pints of huge blueberries picked by our very own hands. The service was always great, all people we encountered were nice, there was not a cloud in the sky until Monday, it was pretty much a picture perfect getaway.

Outside of the Manor, we loved food best at Clementines - casual and inexpensive, yet very tasty.

The only bad meal we had was at the Blue Moon restaurant. Nice decor, nice service, high prices, atrocious food. The highlight of the meal was a tasteless chicken roulade; the steak was mostly a glob of fat with 15% meat, the fish smelled foul. A lady at the table next to us complained about her steak as well. Unless you've been to the Moon many times prior (isolated incident?) and know otherwise - go elsewhere.

Again, Yelton Manor is a true find. Elaine and Robert and the entire staff are courteous and helpful without being intrusive. We drove and walked all over town; nothing looks remotely comparable to YM. Go see for yourself ;) You're welcome to email me with any particular questions.

The only bad thing about Yelton is that eventually you have to leave... We'd like to come back someday for the second helping of everything YM has to offer.
