Great River Road

In mid September 4 senior citizens are planning on driving from St. Louis to Memphis on the Great River Road. From Memphis we are going to Branson, Okla City and return to St. Louis by another route.
My question? We have never been to those areas. Any comments or advice would be helpful. I noticed that some of the attractions shut down by Sept. 1st. Why? Weather? Many thanks for any help. Crystal
