Great Foliage in the White Mountains Right Now!
I was just up in Franconia Notch this past weekend and the foliage is PRIME! What's more, is the weather up here is fantastic. One of the best falls I've seen in a while. I live in Southern New Hampshire and we are getting great color down here too so Lake Winnepesaukee is a great choice too.

Get up to the Whites before the leaves are gone. This upcoming weekend should be good too - I plan to go back.

Nice photo. Columbus Day weekend is late this year. It's really prime in the Concord NH area right now but I'm always surprised. Different varieties of maples color at different times. We've got a lot of swamp maples around our house so it's pretty colorful right now. We've been having some unusually beautiful weather.
Bad part, the early cold, rainy summer was a disaster for a local farm's pumpkins. No pumpkin carving this year (they provided hundreds of free pumpkins) and lighted jack-o-lantern display for Halloween. But apples are great and the orchards are loaded. So pretty to see the clusters of apples on the branches.
I would recommend going to the White Mountains this weekend. I think Columbus Day weekend will be too late for that far north ... esp because we are overdue for rain and wind.

I've not done much exploring the coast of Maine, but will be staying 4 nights in Augusta in just over a week from now. Will it be worth while to drive inland to see color (my UK friends will be in New England for their first time) or stick to the coastal areas?

Augusta isn't very "coastal" but I think it will be approaching peak on the maine coast in the next week or so, so if you have a spare day(s), drive to Acadia, Camden, or Boothbay Harbor. They are all beautiful and should have good foliage!

Last nights news said northern NH and Lakes Region were 100% peak. Concord area ranges from 25-75% peak. Lots of variation so it's just easy to drive around and find great color someplace.
Camden ME was voted one of the best foliage spots in New England. I think it would be worth the drive from Augusta just because it's a beautiful area. We enjoyed driving a loop from Lincolnville to Unity the third weekend in Sept when color was just starting. It's a pretty area green or foliage colors. Pick a good place for lunch to make the drive really worth while.

Mainergirl, your suggestions are great. I've already done a google map that would take me (us) around those areas. Looking forward to this trip. First few days will be Boston western burbs and southern NH/Kittery ME, and then I will move to Augusta to catch up with UK friends.

Make sure you stop in Jackson for the 26th annual "Return of the Pumpkin People" - over 100 businesses participating this year in N. Conway, Bartlett & Jackson - it started as a Jackson event so most are in that area - really creative stuff this year! Displays out until Oct 20th. My husband & I (and a few other board members) did the display at the Jackson Historical Society & Museum of White Mountain Art. It is called Shapleigh From the Inside Out to go along with our FREE current exhibit of Shapleigh paintings - he used to sit inside barns and paint the view of the mountains and always included many of the same elements like yellow hats, pumpkins, cats and chickens.
