Grand Tetons & Yellowstone- Early Dec
Hi, we are travelling out from Australia to visit the National Parks. Does anyone have any info on what is open in early December and what there is to see/tours to do during this time? Any info would be great!
Thanks.
Thanks.

Welcome to the United States. I do hope you enjoy your visit here. In early December some of the national parks, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Glacier, will be on substantially reduced operating schedules. I suggest you check out the park websites for some specifics www.nps.gov. It will be an interesting time to visit and certainly less crowded. Travel safely.

Hello naebee,
You should expect the roads leading in/out of Yellowstone to be closed. Too much snow!
However, all is not lost. Snowmobiling is great fun! There's a great place to rent them not too far from the entrance to Yellowstone, then you drive in the snow to Old Faithful. When we did this a few years ago, there were lots of bison along the roadways.
If you want to stay in Jackson or Jackson Hole, all the hotels will be open. The scenery should be beautiful, with the mountains all white with snow. Of course, depending on the amount of snow (and they get a lot!), it may hinder your hiking abilities in the higher elevations.
The elk should all be down in Jackson at the refuge in December. That's always fun to take the wagon ride and get an up-close look at these animals.
Just be prepared for cold weather. The average high in December is in the 20s to 30s, so pack your long underwear!
Enjoy yourself. It's beautiful up there.
Happy travels!

I would suggest getting/renting some cross-country skis--some fab skiing in Yellowstone (and you like downhill, if Jackson Hole isn't operative, nearby Targhee ski area might be; but depends on whether you actually decide to go into Yellowstone via the open road. (But always check with the U.S.N.P. website before you depend on roads being open.)
