Grand Hotel - Anniversary

Hello

I am planning a July anniversary trip to surprise my wife. I have been looking at the anniversary package at the Grand on Mackinac Island. The package indicates that it includes a five course dinner each night. That would be an important part of the stay. I saw a post from someone who had stayed at the Grand and had dinner there. The person indicated that the food was mediocre. It may be that she had one mediocre meal on a bad evening. It has planted doubt in my mind as to whether I should stick with the package, or instead, book the room and provide for my dinners elsewhere. Since we have never stayed there I need input from someone familiar with the Hotel and the restaurant. Any informaation would be appreciated.

Thanks.
jim

The Grand is with out a doubt a Grand Hotel in every way but once on Mackinac you are there for the duration. I think it's a Grand destination similar to the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, WV.

If you are in the immediate area consider instead a romantic anniversary at Canoe Bay which is one of my all time favorites.

Canoe Bay @ 28 Route 3, Chetek, WI 715 - 924 - 4594.

I have not done that supper at the Grand, but have had very good meals at their other restaurants.

The Grand Luncheon Buffet is a real experience, though once would be enmough during a visit.

We have been to the Luncheon Buffet like the above poster and enjoyed it, especially sitting outside in the rocking chairs afterwards, but we have never been there for dinner. I checked TripAdvisor. No one complained about the food but no one raved about it either...most reported that it was good.

It is good, just not amazing good. They serve a bazillion people a night, so it is impossible to do amazing good. It is a very fun experience though, and a great time to just relax and have a nice meal. The other thing they will let you do is to use the credit of the dinner price towards their other restaurant near the interior of the island. We did that one night and it was great. The credit doesn't cover the entire meal, but close and you do have to take a horse carriage there and back, which is of course fun. But the restaurants in downtown are great too, so I don't think you could really make a bad choice on this one.
