Grand Canyon Trip Help

Jump to last reply

I'm in the beginning stages of planning a September trip to the Grand Canyon. I have never been out west and am finding it hard to decide what to do on this first adventure. It will be myself & my 10 year old son.

I've looked on here, as well as other travel sights and thought I'd ask for help/suggestions.

I'm looking at 7 days...give or take.

Option 1: Fly into Colorado Springs, Mesa Verde, Page/Lake Powell, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Grand Canyon, fly out of Las Vegas (or reverse?)

Option 2: Fly into Phoenix, Sedona, Flagstaff (wild west train), Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion, fly out of Vegas (or reverse?)

Another option would be flying into Salt Lake City. Flights into Flagstaff are more than double so that isn't high on my list.

Traveling with a 10 year old, I'd like to mix it up. I don't expect him to hike 10+ miles/day but he is adventurous and would like 5 miles or so each day I think.

I'm interested in possibly doing a kayaking trip in Page/Lake Powell and also maybe a float down the Colorado or the rafting out of Peach Springs.

I'm the type that needs a general plan but definitely not a strict itinerary....that just makes for too much stress for everyone I'd like to explore and break off if we see something interesting. So....a loose plan is what I'm looking for.

Also -- budget friendly places to stay would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks so much!!
