Grand Canyon to LA
Hi, need your advice.
We are visiting the US and staying at Grand Canyon for a few days then going to LA. We are thinking of driving from Grand Canyon to LA in mid Dec.Understand the drive would be about 7hrs.
1. How is the route like?, as in , is it a simple and comfortable drive at that time of the year?
2. Thinking of breaking up the long drive over 2 days, by staying overnight at Desert Hills for some outlet shopping or Lake Havasu City, any comments?
3. Would flying from Flagstaff be better?
Thanks

Interstate 40 is a well maintained and wide. For the most part speeds will be in the seventy mile per hour range with well spaced rest stops and fuel stations.
I consider the drive to be scenic, descending from the pine forests of Arizona then across the desert to Southern California.
Lake Havasu would be a nice stop especially during the winter but you may encounter snow in the high country near Williams.

I like janisj's idea of stopping in Las Vegas (they have two very nice outlet malls there as well) and then you can either fly or drive (5 hours, do not drive this on Sundays) to the LA area. Where are you staying in the LA area? It is quite large and spread out.

Where are you coming to Grand Canyon from? Where are you picking up the rental car? Snow is a possibility in the Grand Canyon area in mid December.
Taking the Amtrak Southwest Chief from Flagstaff to Los Angeles might be a good choice.

if you have the time, i'd split the drive up and spend the night in lake havasu or palm springs area. if you drive straight through, you'll be tired by the time you get to la and if you then hit bad traffic, it could add on more time. be careful that you don't arrive in la during a rush hour zone.
